Post-traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD, is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or seeing a terrifying event such as a soldier would experience in war. There are many treatment methods for those who suffer from PTSD but unfortunately there is no cure. The most common and effective treatments are cognitive behavior therapy, stress inoculation training, virtual reality treatment, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), medications, group therapy, brief psychodynamic psychotherapy, and family therapy.
Cognitive behavior therapy- This therapy helps a patient understand and accept what has occurred to cause them traumatic memories. This is helps the patient learn what thoughts or situations can cause you stress due to their traumas. It is also proven to be the most helpful Stress inoculation …show more content…

This allows the patient to relive his or her trauma in a controlled environment with guidance provided by his or her therapist.
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) - This therapy consists of the therapist guiding his or her patient’s eyes with gestures or taps while they remember traumatic events. This is a relatively new therapy and it’s not yet clear how this therapy works or even if it does work at all. Medications- Many of those who suffer from PTSD also struggle with depression and/or anxiety. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) can help with these side effects. Many of these medications include citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozaz), paroxetine (Paxil), Sertraline (Zoloft). Group therapy- Is a therapy type where many members from a community gather and discuss their traumas and how they each cope with PTSD. This can help patients feel more comfortable knowing they are not alone and help build healthy relationships with others struggling with the same
