The Preamble and the Federal Budget: Are We Slicing the Pie Correctly? America is arguably the most powerful country in the world, which means that the way the country spends its money has an expansive impact. Politicians and citizens all have different opinions on how the United States should spend the Federal Budget. They also have opinions on whether or not America is currently spending its money according to the Preamble goals. I personally feel that America could do a better job in the allocation of funds and going by the preamble. While some things are budgeted wisely, there is always room for improvement. I believe the United States should change what causes they give their money to, to better support the country. The Big Five contains paying for; Medicare and Medicaid, Defense, Social Security, Interest on National Debt, and Safety Net Programs. I do believe that these things are important and fit into the Preamble’s goals of general welfare and defense. However, I think that the government does not need to spend as much on Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security as it is currently. With “22% ($845 billion) spent on Medicare/Medicaid and 20% ($778 billion) spent on Social Security” (Document C) almost half of the Federal Budget is going to only two programs. Those both provide for general welfare, but I think there are other more effective ways of providing for the general welfare of the country. In my opinion the best thing to do would be to take 5% from Medicare/Medicaid and 3% from Social Security. Both would still have plenty of the budget, but it would also allow for more proactive spending in the middle five and little
