Hi Erick, This servant leader is about the nicest inspired motivation, and I agree that one should never expect payment for doing a good job. The rewards are being able to help others and in return is job satisfaction. I tell myself this every day when I walk into my unit. The servant leader ultimately creates a caring world, and it showed by inspiring you to pursue a degree.
Jennifer McClellan, RN, BSN is presently my Associate Service Manager, for the Urgent Care Emergency Department. She has been in that position since May, 2013. Her main responsibilities are to manage the flow in the unit, since our unit is a fast paced, and we have a high volume of patients. Also, if there is a problem, she has to go above and beyond to fix the problem. She also has to handle patient’s complaints which are something not uncommon in our unit.
Leadership in the military is a complex and multifaceted concept that requires different leadership styles to accomplish various goals. Two of these styles are servant leadership and fellowship, which share similarities but have some key differences. This essay will compare and contrast servant leadership vs fellowship in the military, highlighting their similarities and differences. Servant Leadership in the Military Servant leadership is a style of leadership that prioritizes the needs of others before the needs of the leader. It is an approach that focuses on serving the followers to achieve organizational goals.
Servant leadership is not the only leadership theory that is compatible with the Christian worldview. Others Christian-compatible leadership principles include Transformational Leadership Theory. Northouse (2016) states transformational changes and transforms people. The theory concern with emotions, values, ethics, standards, and goals while assessing followers’ motives, satisfying followers’ needs, and treating members’ as full human beings. In the beginning of EMS the most dominant style of leadership was based on a transactional approach,rewarding those individuals that follow procedures with positive incentives and reprimanding those that do not with reprimands. However,times are rapidly changing and the servant style of leadership is quickly becoming more acceptable and recognized throughout the industry. The field of EMS is unique, sometimes posing unconventional issues that must be addressed, in addition to those that occur on a daily basis. The servant style of leadership can become an effective and preferred method of leadership when applied in a balanced method. This style of leadership places the emphasis on nurturing the needs of the subordinate employees.
I want to be a New Leaders Council fellow because I am impressed by the career building opportunities that it provides to its fellows. I am at a point in my career where I must continue to build my network to further develop my career. I am interested in the opportunity to learn from others experiences and share in ways that can help to build others. I am impressed that the New Leaders Council represents is a collective of changemakers that are prepared to address the complexities in society. In review of the website, I am excited to see the curriculum designed to develop leaders in several areas including: communications, fundraising, and political management.
The basic principle of servant leadership is serving others and the community. The three principles of the servant-leadership are sharing the power, putting the needs of others first and helping people achieve their highest potential so that they may want to serve others. This creates an environment of trust, collaboration, teamwork and group improvement. Robert Greenleaf created the term, Servant Leader, and creating the idea of leading by serving with individuals and organizations. In one of his major essay’s, The Institution as Servant, Greenleaf (as cited in “What is Servant Leadership,” n.d.) expressed what was frequently called the “credo.”
Through volunteering, I realized successful leaders exhibit perseverance and are self-disciplined and that servant leadership is not a specific style or skill but rather, it is about (a leader’s) behavior and actions, that are adopted over the longer term. As a leader, it is important to understand the organizational mission, values and long-term vision, whether one is working for the organization or a volunteer of it, to effectively and whole-heartedly serve the organization. This experience showed me the areas in my leadership, where I can improve upon. I recognized the importance of listening to others and what a vital part it plays, in building strong and successful relationships. I also recognized, that I tend to want to nurture and care for others, and while that is important, it is also important to recognize when an individual may not welcome that and that is okay.
Boy Scouts has taught me many skills and truths for life, but no skill has had as much impact as servant leadership---the ability to gain the trust of those around you by helping them. Being active and a leader in a group happens naturally now; after years of following, I find myself leading my friends. Whether it was because of being a Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) and Eagle Scout in my troop or, I have drawn in new friends who have grown to look to me as a leader. At the beginning of this school year I drew in many new friends who look to me as a leader. This year I was fulltime dual enrolled at the University of North Georgia which gave me the opportunity to make new friends.
Servant Leadership Servant Leadership begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Than conscious choice, bring one to aspire to lead. Servant leadership is clear from its name and easy to understand. No one would believe if we say that Donald Trump leadership was actually servant Leadership. However, after reading his book and research about his autobiography I can say he has all the characteristics of servant leadership.
The leadership theory I would like to reflect on is servant leadership theory. Northhouse (2013) servant leadership theory reflects on similar characteristics as authentic leadership. Northhouse (2013) discussed how empowering and ethical servant leaders are with their associates. The characteristics of servant leadership that is similar to authentic leadership would be conceptualization, building community, healing and empathy. As for the characteristics of the authentic leadership approach, it is listed as establishing trusting relationships with others, understanding the purpose, having strong values in doing the right thing (ethically) and being enthusiastic about their assignment (Northhouse, 2013).
Servant and Authentic leadership have several characteristic comparisons. Both servant and authentic leadership styles are positive leadership styles. Servant and authentic leaders serve other individuals. They both believe in empowering the employees they serve. The leadership styles possess a high standard of values, displays compassion and passion for integrity to their followers.
Servant Leadership during Natural Disasters Servant leadership is a leader who displays ethical and caring behaviors. These leaders seek to enhance the growth of others while improving quality of life. The two main constructs of this leadership are ethical behavior and concern for subordinates. The characteristics embodied in this are stewardship, foresight, conceptualization, persuasion, building community, listening, empathy, awareness, commitment to growth of people and healing.
Rama combines the utmost care for his followers and an unflinching devotion to their welfare with utmost humility and respect for his followers. This is the mark of the servant leader who is more concerned about the followers than about themselves. Servant leadership consists of seven dimensions (Liden, Wayne, Zhao, & Henderson, 2008)all of which has parallels in Rama’s leadership behavior. Emotional healing entails being sensitive to the follower’s setbacks. Rama’s handling of Bharatha’s guilt and chagrin, Sugreeva’s sense of defeat and Vibheeshana’s gut wrenching feelings of having betrayed his brother are all examples.
Throughout my life I have been blessed with more opportunities than many other people my age. This is why I strive to act on all of the opportunities I have been given, while also satisfying my passion for giving back to those who are less fortunate. Firstly, one of the most beneficial events in shaping myself was attending the National Student Leadership Conference. Hundreds of students are chosen annually for their outstanding leadership qualities within their communities. During the one and half week camp, students not only focus on improving their leadership qualities, but also get hands on experience in the field of their choice.
