Pride is commonly understood to be a great virtue, but it can slowly transform into an indestructible force of arrogance to the point of a person’s downfall. Edger Allen Poe’s short story, “A Cask of Amontillado” shows how pride can be detrimental because of the arrogance it can produce. In this bone-chilling story, Poe describes how Fortunato’s pride leaves him stranded and walled deep in the catacombs of Rome. Pride is a significant cause of downfall as seen in The Cask of Amontillado, because it produces arrogance, it can mislead you to a false sense of dominance and it can mislead you to blindness of personal flaws. Tertullian explains how long and maze like the catacombs are and how easy it would be to get lost through all the tunnels and paths. Tertullian also shows how the lighting conditions are. He expresses how dark the catacombs are and that the inside of the catacombs is just as dark as if it was nighttime. He continues to show that the darkness seems to overpower everything, showing just how dark they really are. Clearly, you can see that the catacombs are a very scary place. There is no reason to go into a catacomb unless you are burying someone or visiting a deceased relative or family member. Unfortunately, Fortunato was lied to. He believed that there was a cask of amontillado waiting for him at the end of the catacombs. Fortunato’s pride overpowered the concern of the situation. Fortunato was a smart individual that would have thought through this interaction if not influenced by his pride. Fortunato was also influenced by alcohol, but even an alcoholic would have been afraid of the dreadful sight of the catacombs.
