1884 MORE LIKE 2024 In 1984 by George Orwell we are able to slip into the shoes of a bleak tale and world where there is no privacy or individual freedom. In the story our characters often surveillance, their every move counts. Would you believe me if I said we are actually similar to Orwell’s envisionment of a highly surveillance society? No. Is it a sham? Actually yes and way more often than you think, in this age of technology everything is online and digital allowing more access to others to share or take information about yourself and others. These days, the widespread use of cellphones, the internet, and digital presence creates important topics regarding the similarities between Orwell's nightmarish future and our own reality. To my beliefs we are quite similar but are using our resources and surveillance for good things, it can help people, and technology has allowed us to harness growth— unlike in “1984” where people were heavily restricted. We live in a world where everyone is watching us all the time—friends, family, acquaintances, and most importantly, the people who make the digital tools we own or download. In iPhones we have special features like Siri or popular home services like Alexa that will listen most of the time to respond to you, they mirror the surveillance mechanisms depicted in "1984”.
