Gun control is a controversial issue among people concerned about firearms in the United States. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, gun control is “a law regulating the purchase, sale, manufacture and use of guns”. Some people believe gun control is not needed in the world; most do. Additionally, there is also another group of people who are neutral about gun control; they just want stricter requirements for owning a firearm. It is important to understand the protection that is wanted, as well as finding an equal balance between having protection and ending violence, and the gun violence that needs to be stopped. To start, most people believe that gun control is needed because of gun violence. For instance, “Guns are simple, reliable tools for killing” (Kristof). Gun violence is a tragic problem that goes on in society. It is committed with guns such as rifles and handguns which are used in robberies, school shootings, and domestic violence. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence; 61,018 robberies involving firearms were committed in 2022 (“Number of robberies”). This shows the dangerous use of firearms in society. Clearly, guns can not be eliminated, but they can be regulated depending on who gets access to them (“Harder to buy one”). Since firearms can not be taken away from society, they can be controlled by those who have ownership of them. Society already prevents people under the age of 21 from purchasing alcohol and cigarettes because it saves more lives, it should be the same way as owning a firearm (“Harder to buy one”).
