The call for gun control is on the rise in the U.S, with the growing number of gun related crimes in the news. Gun control supporters typically feel guns are dangerous and if placed in the wrong hands this can be true. However, firearms are an important part of Americans self-defense and with some regulation and proper training can save lives. The Second Amendment, which reads, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (Gun Control). With mass shooting seeming to run rampant in the U.S. people find it easy to want to blame gun control for gun crimes but the truth is gun control will not change the outcome of evil doers in the United States.
Gun Control laws put civilians at a disadvantage, because criminals who are inclined to violence will not obey laws. How will Americans protect themselves and their loved ones without the right to own firearms. Locking the front door is not enough to deter a gun wilding criminal. Without protection people fall victim to assault, rape, and even death. Self-defense is crucial to surviving an attack. Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President of the NRA, stated, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" (NRA). The Second Amendment allows citizens the right to own firearms. Having access to firearms does not turn someone into a killer. Just like owning a chainsaw in Texas does not make you The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
