A current issue that pertains to our government today is gun control. There are two sides to this issue, pro-gun control and anti-gun control. Pro-gun control advocates want the government to set limits and statutes on guns. On the other side of the issue, anti-gun control proponents believe that gun control violates their second amendment right, the right to bear arms. There are many points to each side of the gun control issue, but for me personally, I am on the anti-gun control side. In these next paragraphs, I will discuss the pros and cons to gun control and evidence to back up each argument. “In America, there are approximately 270 million firearms possessed by civilians, and 897,000 carried by police” (“11 Facts”). Therefore, if the government takes away the right to bear arms, then citizens will not be able to protect themselves from dangerous people or situations. “About half, 48%, of gun owners said the main reason they owned a gun was for protection, according to a Pew Research Center Survey in February 2013. [This rose 22% from the survey results from August 1999]” (Drake). Even if guns are taken off of the market, “Criminals will always find a way to obtain their guns, leaving law-a-biding citizens without any weapons to use in defense” (“Should Civilians”). Although, “Buyers that purchase firearms through private sales in the U.S. don’t have to pass a background check before obtaining possession of a weapon. This includes sales to criminals, felons, and people with a history of mental illness” (“11 Facts”). Whether you go through the proper channels or not, anyone can find a gun or buy one if they really wanted one that badly. If more citizens had a Concealed Handgun License, then more crime can be
