Education today has been criticized by different areas and teachers try to enforce different ways of teaching and learning in order to teach or deliver a particular lesson. Problem solving can be defined as a step to reach the goal or a desire state or stage from where we are now. Students today are what we can call as a basic literacy skill and higher thinking. Basic literary skill is important to learn problem solving largely depend on basic literacy skills. If a learner cannot master basic literacy skill, things that able to represent will be less. As the rising of technology, higher problem solving skill on mathematics and science are needed. Children’s poor performance with mathematical word problems is a trend that I became aware of it …show more content…

In this category involve children not being able to decode the words used in a word problem, not comprehending a sentence, not understanding specific vocabulary and not having confidence or the ability to concentrate when reading. Most of the words that are being used are not really understood by the students therefore with that they find it difficult to answer the questions being asked. Also recognizing and imagining the context in which a word problem is set. These difficulties arise when children cannot imagine the context in which a word problem is set or their approach is altered by the context in which the word problem is given. For example when there is a problem that is being given most students still cannot undertake most of the complex words being used, i.e. the sum of instead of add, the product of instead of multiply, etc. these are some complexity that students needs to be taken slowly because different students have different rate on how they can absorb things. Furthermore, forming a number sentence to represent the mathematics involved in the word problem. In this problem children appear to find it harder to form a number sentence for some word problems structures than others. These difficulties can result in children not being able to select a calculation to perform or selecting an incorrect calculation. Different types of mathematics problem use …show more content…

Firstly, encourage children to read a lot thoroughly. The reason is because through reading they will be able to master literacy and also able to differentiate words being used and its meaning. Furthermore, ensure that children practice solving word-problems to allow them to be able to recognize the structure of word-problems and therefore know when to use each calculation. Take the students slowly with the concepts so that they would know which calculation or formula to use when similar questions are being asked numerical or through word problems. Also encourage children to write down their workings so that they do not become unnecessarily confused. Once you write down the working step by step you will never go wrong in any mathematics questions. In addition, encourage children to check if their answer satisfies the criteria of a question. For example if it is in the correct formula. Most of students answer the question quickly without really reading the questions nicely. Upon rechecking their work again they would know where about they have made a mistake and if the working or formula is being used relevant to question being asked or
