How to Become a Knight A knight is a ruling class in the feudal system. They follow codes of chivalry, and are elite warriors in society. They work for lords, and in exchange for doing so knights are allotted land. Over time, they became more aristocratic and of the nobility, holding positions of power. It should be noted that in the Middle Ages, especially before most traditions involving knights (such as knight training and the concept of chivalry) arose, any skilled warrior elite who served a lord was considered a service knight, albeit with inferior status. But after the twelfth century, in order to be considered for knight training, you usually had to be a male of a noble family. A squire is similar to a page, except that a squire would be an apprentice of a knight. While assisting the knight with his various duties, it is intended that the squire would also fully hone and have more firsthand experience with activities such as armor and weapons maintenance. The knighting ceremony was initially a squire acquiring a sword and spurs, then being dubbed by another knight. Later in the Middle Ages, the knighting ceremony also included various religious rituals. This was in order to cement that by fighting for your lord, (and in turn the king, who ruled by the right granted to him by God) you are fighting for God himself and should behave as such. Along with that, a knighting festival would commence, but it would be very expensive by its nature. Indeed, this prevents many squires from being official knights otherwise. During the peacetime, you will govern your land and peasants, while staying in contact with higher nobility like the lord (or lords) you served. Knights also attend feasts, which brings the nobility together, cementing loyalties and relationships. Hunts are important for learning how to work as a cohesive team for a knight and his peers.
