A 2002 study published by the Southern Medical Journal found that women who had abortions were 154% more likely to commit suicide than women who carried to term (http://abortion.procon.org/). This statistic shows that abortion can be deadly for not only the unborn child, but the mother as well. Many women cannot handle what they have done, so they try to escape reality in the worst way. Thus, this shows that many women don’t understand the gravity of their situation until the child has been removed. Abortion is one of the most divisive issues in our world today, and almost everyone has an opinion about it. Whether someone is a pro-life or a pro-choice supporter, they believe very strongly about their way of thinking. Abortion should not be legal because it is immoral and sends a message that life has little value. Depression after abortion is caused by women who don’t let themselves grieve after the procedure (https://www.newkidscenter.com/). Abortion ProCon wrote about a 2005 study published in BMC Medicine in which it stated that “...women who underwent an abortion had significantly higher anxiety scores on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale up to five years after the pregnancy termination” (http://abortion.procon.org/). Five years is a long time for someone to feel this way, so women shouldn’t put themselves through that pain. Instead of allowing themselves to suffer, they should just decide not to go through with the abortion. Women’s maternal instincts are to care for a child, but many don’t realize the gravity of what they have done until after the child has been deprived of its existence.
