Abortion is when a pregnancy is terminated so it does not result in the birth of a child. In 1969, the Canadian Government legalized abortion. Ever since then, the number of abortions that occur have rapidly increased in large numbers every year; from less than 500 000 in 1970, to approximately 42 million in 2013. There are a staggering number of people who believe that abortions are a fallback plan for their own careless mistakes. The Government of Canada should consider making abortion illegal because it is morally and ethically wrong, causes the fetus to endure extreme pain and it negatively impacts the mental and physical health of a woman.

Over 21.6 million women who have abortions experience post abortion trauma. This trauma is caused by emotional and psychological complications. Some psychological problems that have been observed in women include severe depression, eating disorders, feelings of self hatred, and suicidal ideation. Moreover, abortion can cause serious physical complications in a woman's body. It can cause damage to the cervix which greatly increases the risk of miscarriages and premature birth during later pregnancies, perforation of the uterus which can lead to permanent infertility, and in extreme cases, death. British abortionist, Judith Arcana states, “Over 47000 women die every year because of abortion. The women that do live, experience many emotional and psychological problems which only lead them to more doctors and hospitals. The impacts of abortion cause lifelong problems and decrease their overall confidence.” Therefore, abortions are extremely harmful to women because they negatively affect their mental and physical
