During my studies as an undergraduate student, I developed a strong interest in the children whose circumstances make them at risk of being failed by one or more adults or the system and institutions who interact with them. I chose to pursue a minor in at-risk child and youth care to understand what I can do to help these children and their families. Through my academic coursework and internships, I gained a depth of knowledge and experience that empowers my inherent belief that every child is worthy and capable of achievement and a fulfilling life, given the proper support. Through my work as an undergraduate student, I have worked with many different populations of children and have grown to understand their needs on an individual basis. I will translate my experiences into my graduate work and ultimately my professional work by looking at each student individually. What might be best for one child, is not always going to work for another. I will be diligent in efforts to give individualized attention to those who are struggling in one way or another. I will also place emphasis on creating a positive school culture that allows students to be prideful in where they go to school. Students who are proud of their school are more likely to want to attend school and participate in activities, which greatly enhances school connectedness. Students who feel connected to their school will feel a sense of belonging, which is very important for those who do not have supportive home lives. One of the greatest gifts an educator can give students is the opportunity to learn and gain knowledge in a safe and supportive environment.
