This assignment will discuss gender with reference to the professional identity of nursing. I intend to look at the work of Celia Davies and to obtain information from various other sources such as books, journals and articles in order to broaden my knowledge on the given topic. The areas which will be addressed are Female Dominance within the nursing profession, Professionalization of Nursing, The Success of males within the Profession and finally, Male’s vs. female’s suffering from illness. Women have a tendency to be more proactive then men when addressing health problems women are more familiar with how the health system works and the importance of getting check-ups in the event of illness occurring, this familiarity of the health system which women possess may be associated with their primary role in caring for children and attending doctors’ regularly. Men on the other hand are more hesitant when it comes to addressing their health care needs it is possibly an issue of pride especially in the case of men’s health with things such as erectile dysfunction , prostate cancer and STI checks being avoided due to males being afraid and ashamed in the event of having such an illness, the role of the male nurse is very important in this situation as he can act as an advocate for men by promoting and educating them on how to carry out self-checks and on the services and treatments available . Women are more educated on the importance of carrying out self-checks such as breast examinations and having regular smear tests but can often be negligent in the prevention of such illness’s by leading unhealthy lives smoking having a poor diet and participating in little exercise .This leaves them with a very high risk of acquiring multiple other illnesses such as Coronary Heart Disease, diabetes and hypertension. Both Male and Female nurses have important roles to play in educating patients
