Professional Impact Paper
In reflecting upon this year and a half, I have received a very impactful experience for my career as an educator. As stated by Mpisi et al. (2020), a necessary condition for effective class facilitation is the self-improvement of teachers. Many of my goals have been achieved, and I have been given the tools to go even further in my career. As a first-year educator, I have many different areas that need fine-tuning and I have more to learn, but I feel this year and a half has been an extremely positive learning experience. One of the most significant aspects of ethics is creating a safe and productive learning environment. According to Sensenig (2010) to facilitate ethical decision-making in education, educational leaders must combine it with personal, moral reflection that exemplifies best practice. Following a code of ethics in education means that students are the priority and that they are treated respectfully, fairly, and honestly, at all times. It also means that students’ cultures, learning styles, and different backgrounds are taken into account and respected. As a new educator in an elementary school, I have yet to become leader material, however, I am aspiring to get there. I am currently undertaking the role of Grade Level Leader (GLL) and I am learning how to navigate my role. I have observed a few incidents of unethical behavior among my peers. What I have witnessed that I will never take part in, is the discussion of students in a negative manner, outside of the classroom. In my opinion, there are no students in my eyes that are dumb, and test scores do not define students, however many well-respected educators and staff members have discussed both of these topics without thinking twice. It is my impression that trust and strong relationships are built with students, and it would be extremely detrimental if some of the students knew what their adult educators have said about them. The unethical behavior that I describe has occurred multiple times throughout my educational career as an intern, then a student teacher, and finally a classroom educator. I believe ethics is a crucial component in education, and teachers should take this role seriously and
