What are the important qualities of the professional relationship between worker and service user and why is it important?
This assignment will examine the important qualities of the professional relationship between workers and service users and why they are important. It will cover definitions that are in the title and the seven qualities of Biestek’s Casework Relationship (1957) which are Purposeful expression of feelings, Controlled emotional involvement, Acceptance, Individualisation, Non-judgemental attitude, Client self-determination and Confidentiality. Definitions from the title to help understand the question been asked. Professional relationship means boundaries set by two people that follow the rules of ethic in governing conduct .Service user uses the services in a health and social care service .Social worker is someone who works with individuals, families, groups and communities to help individuals develop skills. Conclusion that relationships are symbiotic the worker shares his knowledge and greatly influence the service user to live the best life they can. Client expressing feelings and the worker to listen for a purpose feelings include anger, sad, confused or happy. “Purposeful expression of feelings in the recognition of the clients needs to express their feelings freely especially their negative feelings”(Felix biestek:1957:35) This is referring to the client to be human and express the feelings necessary given the situation, the caseworker should maintain a professional relationship and understand the client but if this is negative and involves the client been hostile this should not be encouraged to advance any further with the client in that frame of mind as it puts the caseworker or other people at risk as it doesn’t fix the situation. The reason it can be good is because it allows the client to express stress, tension and pressure related to the topic that has caused a client to become hostile this allows the caseworker to understand service user’s feelings.
