“Effective communication is one of the most vital components of healthcare” (Crouch et al. , 2013). It is through effective communication that nurses are able to discuss their client’s needs and provide all the necessary elements for increased healing both physically and mentally. Nurses are able to form a therapeutic relationships with their clients through various forms of communication and provide the best care needed for not only the client but for the family members of the client as well. Such patients who feel overpowered, are less likely to express their fears and discuss difficult matters which may heavily result in a negative impact on their health. According to the new research conducted by Old (2012), “…male patients [are likely to] use humour to conceal their feelings [and…] would find it easier to discuss difficult matters with a nurse who has a sense of humour” (p. 39). Thus, as a nurse it is their responsibility to communicate with their patients in unique and fun ways by yet maintaining their boundaries. By sprinkling their conversations with some humour depending on the situation and patient, they can build a strong therapeutic nurse-client relationship. There may be some cases where the nurse-client relationship might be on a personal level however, with this unique bonding nurses will be able to advocate and provide appropriate care for the patient. This is backed up by the recent research by Treymayne where he concluded that with the use of little humour between the nurse and client, it can result in a strong therapeutic relationship which is somewhat on a personal level which can then “be applied to clinical practice” (Treymayne, 2014, p.38). Communication between a nurse and small child maybe hard because children do not have strong communications skills and tend to shy away from strangers. Therefore, building rapport is a must and can be done by successfully integrating humour in the conversation. According to many previous studies done by researchers, they have all come to the conclusion that, “children […] appreciate humour that contains imagery, while the use of visual aids or songs may stimulate greater engagement”. ((Williams et al 2009, Killick 2010, Pryor 2010). Use of humour with little kids can help nurses be diligent in their roles and provide advocacy and empathy and competency. For the nurse to be able to care according to their standards a strong bond is necessary between the client and patient and with little kids humour is the best to become way to their favorite buddies so they cooperate during clinical procedures for example when giving them a shot. According to research done by Ford et al (2011) on little kids, they found that little kids like nurses who are able to make them laugh and have a smiley face and are funny.
