Abortion is the practice of ending a pregnancy by the causing the death of the human fetus. Abortion is a growing issue in the United States. There are two main sides to this issue. Those who are “pro-choice,” meaning that they believe in women choosing the fate of their pregnancies, and also those who are “pro-life,” meaning that they believe ending a pregnancy short-term is murder. In 1973, abortion was legalized in the United States because of the famous court case of Roe v. Wade. Roe was a single pregnant woman who was fighting the state of Texas at the time because abortion was illegal. Roe won the case and abortion was legalized. This goes to show that laws against abortion do not stop abortion; they simply make it less safe. The amount of women who choose to abort a pregnancy does not change when it becomes illegal. The only thing that changes is more women die from unsafe procedures. Examples of unsafe abortion procedures include puncturing the amniotic sac with a coat hanger to terminate the pregnancy, pumping toxins into the mother’s body, and also at-home abortions that are not sterile and do not have a practitioner present. Every year, 78,000 women die from unsafe abortions. Currently there are approximately 1.21 million abortions in the U.S. per year. Making abortion illegal could potentially cause over one million women to turn to harmful alternatives instead of going to a trusted clinic. Odds are that 1 in 3 women will be victims of sexual violence in her lifetime. Women who are raped or victims of incest should not be forced to carry out a pregnancy that is from an assault or rape incident. Making abortion illegal would mean that 33% of all women should be forced to carry out a pregnancy from this violation if they were to become pregnant. The depression and grief a mother would have to go through to raise a baby that reminds her of the attack is tremendous. Although women do suffer emotional damage from having abortions, the toll is not as bad in most cases on the mothers mind. There have also been cases where if a mother goes through with her pregnancy and gives birth she could risk her own life. 70,000 girls ages 15-19 die each year from pregnancy and childbirth (Abortions in America, 2014). There are other medical conditions that prohibit women from ever going through the physical stress of child birth other than being too young as well. In some cases reproductive choice can be the only thing that stands between a woman and death. Taking away the option of abortion could possibly end up taking away a mother’s right to choose to live. One who is pro-life may argue that if a woman does not want a baby after becoming pregnant then she can give the baby up for adoption.
