Many different options exist for couples who either want children but cannot have them or couples who have children but do not want them. Adoption, being one of the more popular options, has developed into a law binding agreement between the government and the parents towards the child. Its original purpose during the ancient times was continuing the male family line, but modern adoption from a foreign country to the United States is a challenging process with much sacrifice needed. Adoption has both positives and negatives for not only the newly unorphaned child, but also for the single couple or family. Governments across the nation have worked with each other through The Hague Convention and other organizations to help children find a home. Children cannot come from a third world country filled with violence and debt, and expect to easily transition into a rich home in the suburbs. The child will not adjust well to the society of peace if all they have ever known is crime. While that may not be the country’s unique culture, it is how the people often live. The customs of people such as clothing, art, or manners does have an important feature. Children need to know where they come from, and how their people conduct themselves. Instead, citizens push aside all aspects of culture leading to cultural genocide. Cultural genocide is a term used to mean “deteriorating toward a culture's history, morals, and traditions, typically by some other, superior culturally-based group of people” (Pam, 2017). The parents and adoption agencies are the superior group, while the innocent children allow it to happen because they do not know better.
