Euthanasia should be permitted everywhere around the world because all individuals have the right to determine their future either by choosing death or the right to live. For instance, in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck the companionship of Candy and his dog is very strong as they stay together all day long. Candy’s dog has become very old and weak in which he is forced to give up his life since he was no use. According to the text, “He ain’t no good to you, Candy. An’ he ain’t no good to himself.
There are likely over a billion pets worldwide, and 600 million stray cats and dogs. Throughout the world, there are multiple kill shelters, where animals get anesthesia injected into them to end their lives harmlessly. When I was little I had a dog named Zeus. Zeus was 13 years old whenever he had to be put down because it hurt him to walk. It got to the point were he didn’t want to eat because it took too much energy. My Mom always told me, “It was better for him to die because he was in too much pain.” Whenever someone ‘puts down’ and dog or an other animal it is actually called euthanasia.
Animals are great and make our lives better but when they are suffering and all we can do is extend their pain for a few months and pay thousands of dollars it just isn’t worth it. Americans nowadays spend money on tons of things that aren’t worth it, but spending thousands of dollars on dying animals is ridiculous. Furthermore, people even treat their animals as family like for example “Eighty-Three Percent refer to themselves to as their parents pet’s mom or dad” (The Last Meow). As a former pet owner I can say that it is ridiculous how people consider animals as their family and use that to justify spending thousands of dollars to keep them for a few months longer.
Of those 7.6 million animals 2.7 animals are euthanized or put down. Some animals are adopted and some are returned to their owners, but I still think that is a lot of animals, capable of being good companions being put down. What I think is a very important fact is, “the cost of spaying or neutering a pet is less than the cost of raising puppies or kittens for a year”(aspca.org). Not only do you help animals but you earn a good salary and get advanced schooling. Personally, I would never be able to put somebody’s pet to sleep. As a child I had the most amazing dog that anyone could ever ask for. She was 15 years old when we had to put her down and it was truly the saddest day of my life. From an economic standpoint, euthanasia is a brilliant alternative. Though many see it as unethical, it may be relieving for the victims to know that once they’ve passed they’re no longer considered burdens to their families. Though harsh, keeping a terminally ill person alive for a year costs no less than $55,000, dying in a dignified way is their last resort when they know their condition is not going to improve. Many patients with incurable diseases have stated that the lengthy and expensive time and operations granted by their families are not worth the few extra months they get of spending time on Earth.
