8:46 a.m. The first crash of that disastrous day occurs. Hundreds die on impact, smoke bellowing from floors 93-99 in the North Tower. Then at 9:03, a second plane hits the famed World Trade Center in New York City, this time the South Tower. Later in that day, a third and fourth plane were hijacked, one would crash into the Pentagon and another would crash in a field in Pennsylvania thanks to the brave passengers on board. These events would mark the beginning of a new era in a historic global issue, terrorism. This was the day the entire world realized that terrorists had just kicked it up a notch in the amplitude of their attacks. The world also realized that this was an issue that needed to be acted upon, immediately.

Domestic terrorism takes place within national borders and can involve governments employing terrorist techniques against civilians (Terrorism 6). This practice has been used since the Spanish Inquisition, which began in the late 1400s, Catholic Church officials used terrorist methods to punish heretics, or those who held beliefs contrary to church teachings. It was also implemented by the governments of Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, and various Latin American countries used arrests, torture, and execution to spread fear among the population and to stamp out opposition or rebellion (Terrorism 6). The fear of domestic terrorism is especially present for minorities. White supremacy groups, such as the KKK, have been present for over a century. This is an issue because the government, at first, took very few steps to stop it. One example of this, although not affiliated with the KKK, includes a racially motivated shooting at a church in Charlestown, South Carolina. In June 2015, Dylann Roof, a white supremacist, murdered nine African Americans in an effort to start a race war. (Terrorism 7). Its cases such as this one that strike fear into the hearts of the public. Both when carried out by the government, and citizens, the use of domestic terrorism must be brought to a halt. The most dramatic, and recent, illustration of ending the problem was carried out by none other than Donald Trump. He dropped a 21,600 pound bomb on an ISIS site. The bomb was the largest non-nuclear bomb ever used to date. The death toll is uncertain, but the strike "targeted a system of tunnels and caves that ISIS fighters used to move around freely”, according CNN News. The bomb was dropped after fighting had intensified over the last week between US Special Forces and Afghan troops against ISIS (Press Secretary Sean Spicer). The area was also suspected to hold 600-800 ISIS members. Although this is the most recent big step taken, there have been other attempts to stop terrorism, such as when President Bush declared a “War on Terrorism” after the 9/11 attacks, to stop the threat of global terrorism. The U.S military, along with a few other world powers, had been fighting terrorist groups for many years before Trump’s bomb. One big accomplishment of the ground fighting was the assassination of Osama Bin-Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda, by U.S Seal Team 6. This marked the end of of al-Qaeda being a real threat, but marked the beginning of ISIS. Steps continue to be taken to slow down ISIS, but their international propaganda will make them difficult to completely
