Many kids and teens forget basic skills over a very long summer break. It can be hard to re-learn and to re-teach as a student and a teacher. In Year Round School How it Affects Students by Matthew Lynch and The Pros and Cons of Year-Round School by Scholastic explains the problem with the traditional schedule. The Year-Round School schedule is superior to the traditional schedule because students are less likely to froget concepts, are more willing to focus, and still ‘have time to have fun. The biggest problem, with the traditional schedule, is students forget already taught concepts.
The readworks article “ time to think” explains the debate, students should be in school longer. On the other had the side that believes that school days should stay the same saids that longer days will not be beneficial to the students. In the article It states that there are advantages and disadvantages of changing schools hours. In both sides they do have some similarities.
School start time and its effect on students has been an issue that many teachers and parents have argued over for many years. In districts all throughout the country, elementary, middle, and high schools start classes around different times, commonly making high schools begin their classes the earliest. The current standard start time for most schools is between 7-9 am, with some starting even earlier. This day-to-day schedule has been deeply rooted into the mind of many students for as long as they can remember with many believing that any type of change to this schedule would not benefit students or their studies. However, some experts argue that starting school later would have positive effects on both the physical and mental health of
Introduction In the article Time To Think from the website Readworks it talks about the argument about, how long the school day should be. Some schools have been arguing weather they should make the school day longer, and or keep it the same. Some are stating in regular school days teachers don’t get enough teaching. However, others are stating that the the long days will get in the way of after school plans or family time.
Though I concede that I as a student who wants more time off,I feel that more school would be better for me. For example, increasing instructional time causes more learning per year. Although some might object that the more time we have during school, the more time we forget about the subjects we learn in the beginning of the year. I would reply that the more time we are in school, the more our brain expands and holds in on all of this knowledge. For this reason and more, this issue is important because this issue is the difference between more time in school or not.
When a student has an extra day off, they can spend more time focusing on their studies and taking the time to master a concept. To illustrate, Katherine Bradley states in an article for the Seattle Post- Intelligencer that “Oakridge School District Superintendent Don Kordosky reported that test scores improved after his district in Oregon implemented the four-day school week.” In other words, students academically improved after having an extra day off. The four-day school week is beneficial because it allows students to fully grasp the lesson they are learning, and if they are having trouble with a certain lesson, during the weekend they can practice it until they can finally understand the material. This is beneficial in the long run as it will allow students to get a better understanding of the material that is being taught to them, thus leading to higher grades.
Socrates did believe that he was doing a service to the city, he also believed he could only do this service using his philosophy. He did not do this, because he had an ego or he thought of himself as someone great, but he simply just wanted to help people view their knowledge in rather different perspectives. At this point, most people in Athens were taught to believe in the same things which included the same religious views, political views, how they viewed their hierarchy, etc. Socrates wanted people to just come out of their known comfort zone. He questioned people, challenging their own knowledge, and allowing them to think further into depth of things rather than just thinking simply.
Government believes extending the school day or even extending the amount of days a student attends school make will a big difference academically. Some are even pushing for year round school. This is not the best choice. For one extending the school year to a whole year will actually do the opposite then planned. The students and faculty would get tired of the full- time schooling and not use the time wisely.
Jayden Miller English 12 CP Mrs. Crabtree 3 April 2023 Four-Day School Week There are many ways a four day school week has shown to be better for students and teachers than a five day school week; some examples include increased morale, less disciplinary referrals, and more effective teaching. The four day school week is a very effective way for schools to become better for teachers and students. First of all, schools with four day school weeks do not have as many disciplinary problems with their students. One way this is shown is when Donis-Keller and Silvernail states, “[Some] of the most positive and ubiquitous findings in several studies and reports examining the four-day week has been in increased attendance for both teachers and students…
They have the ability to adapt to changes and can appreciate the benefits of a 3 day weekend. However, other students learn differently and are not always able to handle the dramatic shift in the amount of time that they are able to spend with their teachers. Detractors of the 4 day school week point to the fact that at risk children and those with learning disabilities may not be able to get the most out of a 4 day school week. The 4 day school week works best for a child who is self-motivated and does not serve the needs of children who do not learn in the same way. Longer days lead to a decrease of focus, which can cause grades to slip for students who already struggle with concentration.
However, a school could compensate for lost time by adding time to the end of another day that week if they found this to be an issue. To ensure that four-day school weeks will be implemented throughout school districts, voice concerns to school board members. Although some have oppositions to the idea of a four-day school week, it is clear that this modification would be for the greater good of the schools. By omitting a school day, students, parents, staff, and the environment will benefit
When there is no encouragement, the teenagers often don’t show up to school. The lack of effort correlates to teachers because it could dispirit them from doing work they want to assign in class. Changing to a four day school week can give additional benefits to all parties involved including students, teachers, and the school settings. If a four-day school week was implemented in American school districts, the performance plus achievement for students will increase along with a higher attendance.
Longer or shorter? There have been many disputes on if the school days should be longer, shorter, or the same as it is now. School days should be longer because of three reasons. One of the reasons is that the students at school with longer days have had better performances. There has been an increase in skill in subjects math, science, reading and language arts.
To keep schools running 5 days a week is such a high cost that really isn’t affordable. This causes budget cuts and that makes for a lower quality learning experience”. That shows just by shorting the hours and days students go to school makes a big impact in the amount of money being saved. To add on to why schools should be shorter is the amount of sleep students get a day. Have you ever thought about how much sleep your child is getting or in better words how much sleep is your child missing.
Debate essay Ask anyone and I’m pretty sure they would tell you they want longer weekends. Students start looking forward to 3pm on Friday the minute their alarm wakes them up on Monday morning. Weekends are opportunities for students to let go of stress and to focus on the activities they enjoy. Some people just want longer weekends because they’re too lazy or busy. Longer weekends would make school more and exciting for students because it would give them more opportunities for self-directed work.
