Pros And Cons Of GMO Research

2487 Words10 Pages

GMOs are living organisms that are artificially manipulated through genetic engineering. According to the U.S Food and Drug Administration, foods grown from genetically engineered plants are required to meet the same safety requirements as food made with non-GMO plants. They have created a lot of debates around the world discussing the use of GMOs because there is a growing amount of information about GMOs that confirm serious health and environmental issues due to these new foods. This essay will be an overview of this topic and explain what are GMOs, what differs this method of agriculture to the artificial method of agriculture, how scientists create GMOs by transferring genes from one organism to the other, the safety and health associated to these genetically modified crops, and a …show more content…

Honey bees are an essential part of the world’s food production, though for the past few years they have been dying at an alarming rate. In 2011, nearly 12 million bees died in Florida. Last year, 37 million bees died in a Canadian beekeeping operation. That same month, the people of Oregon found 25,000 bumble bee corpses in a Target® parking lot.
Scientists suggest that the reason is a special kind of pesticides, called neonicotinoids.
A USD research found that beekeepers lost 42% of their bees in 2014, whereas in 2013, only 34% of their bees died. The weird phenomenon is that more bees die in summer, than in winter. A beekeeper observes that, normally, bees thrive in summer, but here they are dying more than in winter, the most stressful time for bees. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is spending 15 million dollars to learn more about the effect of pesticides.
The point is, with GMOs, farmers wouldn’t be obligated to spray their fields with pesticides, more precisely neonicotinoids, so millions of bees wouldn’t die and they would still get the same results, possibly better, than using non-GMO
