Pros And Cons Of Genetic Modification

861 Words4 Pages

As said by Willard Gaylin in the beginning of the movie “I not only think that we will tamper with nature, I think Mother Nature wants us to.” I believe that we should allow human genetic modification at birth. We shouldn’t go to far quickly though, but should be able to stop diseases/suffering early as much as we can. Not to mention since the climate may continue to change in the future, we might need to revise our future generation’s so as to better fit our future environment. Although I approve gene modification, there are others who don’t. Because we can choose our childrens genetic makeup, we may limit them from what they actually want to do as they grow older. Nevertheless, let me begin in explaining the pros of allowing genetic engineering, starting with delaying others’ deaths. We …show more content…

Our climate is changing, and because of that I don’t think we have a choice in this situation. We may need to alter our future generation’s genes, so as to ensure humanity’s survival. What if we have to change our genes so we can live in a hotter climate? Or be able to live requiring less oxygen? Even maybe to live underwater instead of on land? The future is unpredictable. We might as well be prepared for the worst while hoping for the best. So far in the battle against climate change we haven’t been making any progress, and Jerome states in GATTACA “If at first you don’t succeed… try, try again.” This may be a strange solution, but then again none of our solutions for this dilemna have been very successful. If it’s the only choice we have and it’s a matter between life and death, I know I would be up for it. Besides, human engineering is probably less dangerous then geoengineering. There is only 1 Earth, and if we mess up in whatever we’re trying to do, it may result in an irreversible costly catastrophe. Despite the pros in allowing gene modification, there are those who believe the cons outweigh the
