Yes. I strongly agree with the position of the Norwegian and Japanese governments to permit the hunting of non-endangered species as a cultural exemption. Since the whales they seek to hunt are not endangered, its not an environmental reason to ban whaling of species. Furthermore, whaling has always been a part of their culture as the local fishermen hunts these whales, primarily as a food source for the people and a source of income for them. Norway and Japan posses the right to preserve their culture and to block any influence that globalization may have on their culture.

Since America is trying to impose this law on Norway and Japan, both parties should have a chance to present their reasons why or why not these countries should adhere to the International Whale ban. Members of the International Whaling Commission can also vote on the issue of whether or not whaling should be continued given the fact that whaling is a cultural right of these nations. The World Trade Organization may be asked to weigh in the validity of these claims, however, the decision should be unbiased. The WTO should research this issue and have an open mind to determine whether or not whaling is done for cultural means and if it should be continued. Also, if whaling be permitted in these countries, there should be certain limitations to prevent the endangerment of these species. Those who should be on these panels are those nations that have no conflicting interest in the act of whaling, those nations that don’t think whaling should be acceptable nor think that whaling is inhumane. With this impartial mindset, they will have a better chance of making a honest decision after hearing both sides of the issue.
