It’s your birthday and you turn 18 years old finally considered a legal adult. When you are 18 you have so many things you can do like legally vote in elections, buy tobacco products, own firearms, be tried as an adult in court, enlist in the army, purchase pornography, and even serve jury duty. One thing you still can’t do till you turn 21 is purchase and drink alcohol. The law has not always been like that till the Drinking Age Act passed in 1984. The states did not have to switch the age from 18 to 21 but they threatened the states that they would decrease federal funding to each of the states transportation fund if they did not change the age within 2 years. It would also help reduce the crime of people between ages of 18 through 21. The law that says you have to be 21 to drink does not prevent a single college student from ever getting his hands on alcohol if they really want it. The only true thing the law does is makes people under 21 that are doing nothing out of the ordinary into lawbreakers. This causes the kids to disrespect all the other law’s which come’s into play when they are already engaging in “illegal behavior” just by drinking alcohol. That means the line for right and wrong has already been crossed which makes it easier for them to engage in more illegal behavior. Under age drinking is the main cause for death for kids under the age of 21. Every year about 5,000 people die that are under 21 from it. Alcohol is also risky sexual behavior wise 50,000 people under 21 have experience date rape drug with alcohol. So if the U.S. would lower the drinking age than all this would be much lower just like In Canada where the age is 18 and have the same number as us with us having to be 21 to drink.
