Pros And Cons Of Net Neutrality

Net neutrality is and has been a hotly debated topic. For over ten years heated discussions have taken place as to what exactly net neutrality is, what it means to stand on either side of the argument, and why it matters in the first place. The internet is used for such a wide array of purposes – information, staying in touch with relatives, entertainment, and employment to name a few – that it’s worth taking a second look at what might happen if amendments are made to the current regulations. Keeping in account this level of reliance on the internet, crippling current net neutrality laws would hinder entrepreneurship and lead to further monopolization of global industries. There is so much to lose by allowing the Federal Trade Commission to oversee what should rightfully remain under the governance of the Federal Communications Commissions.

Though the internet is often considered a vestibule for open conversations, there is some illusion to the matter. It isn’t all bad, of course, as we can use email and search filters to keep things from sight if we so choose, such as spam filters or Google’s safe search. The problem appears when (Cox, 2010) “censored material goes well beyond offensive material and includes a great deal of political information and opinion, especially debates about international issues such as wars and human rights violations”.
