The Grading System: Completely Necessary Grades are an important part of the school system. Grades set the extraordinary students apart from the ordinary ones. In Jerry Farber’s essay, “A Young Person’s Guide to the Grading System,” he argues that grades are the only motivation students have in school. Farber even calls it “phony motivation.” He argues that students do not actually learn anything.
I think that giving grades is a good way to look at how well a child is doing as an overall in that class. But I also think that grades don’t always give you enough reasoning as to why you got that grade. If a teacher would write a paragraph explaining how we were doing in each subject it would allow students to see what they need to fix without getting a letter that decides whether the kid is doing good or bad in that class. I think if teachers were to use both of these techniques and combine them together it would allow students to succeed more in their classes. The students would be able to see how they are doing in the class with a letter grade but also how they can improve this grade with a paragraph explaining how they are doing.
Have you ever felt like there was no point in school only because you were easily given passing grades? Farber gives off a straightforward hatred towards the grading system we have today, Farber tries to make the system seem bad in every possible way . I have to agree with Farber that the current grading system doesn’t actually help students learn, it just rather helps them memorize without actually learning the material. This is a crucial step for student to actually learn rather than memorize. Yet, the A to F grading system really only helps us please our teacher and parents of showing our high grades, but once the test is done, do the students really need to remember all of the information they stored in their heads for that test?
Did you know that removing letter grades would decrease student stress, pressure, and the feeling of failure?
