While using this method you should always be unobtrusive, which means not to be so attracting or gaining so much attention. You should always try to blend in with your subjects and try not to alarm them. When you blend in with your subjects you are more likely to get optimal results for your data. For this method it is always good to allow participants to habituate or accumulate to you. An article that used Observational methods administered a self-referent encoding task and used the dot-probe task to adolescents with bipolar disorder along with a demographically similar health comparison group (Whitney, J.,
c. A researcher is planning to analyze the effect of multiple strategies to teach fractions to 6th – graders in Happy Valley School District. She assigns each 6th – grader a number and uses a random number generator to select students for each of her research groups. Ans. Systematic Sampling because she assigns a random nth number to select students for each of her research groups.
Sarah Riad El Hindi ID: 64789 Chapter 1 – Thinking Like an Economist Economics in simple terms is the study of scarcity. Scarcity of resources heavily influence the decisions made for society, and how they impact the society as a whole. In the real world, it’s not possible to always have the best of both worlds; therefore one must have to make a trade-off between two desired things. The same thing is implied in economics, and it is what we call The Scarcity Principle.
An experimental method allows the researcher to have more control over the study. An independent variable is a controlled
The dispute between psychotherapy and medication has been on the rise and was debated for decades. Many people with mental illnesses may turn to psychiatric drugs instead of psychotherapy, because they are uneducated and unaware of the effectiveness of therapy and its benefits. Psychotherapy is an alternative way to treat mental illnesses rather than to use harsh medication that may potentially cause more harm than good in the long run. Medication on the other hand are just prescribed pills that just temporarily bandage the problem rather than heal it There are many cases in which proves that therapy is more effective opposed to medication in helping patients with mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and phobias.
Across America, there are around sixteen million people who struggle or who have struggled with depression (“Major Depressive”). Approximately two million, or six percent of the US population, of those people suffering from depression also have seasonal depression (Targum). Many of them have been prescribed antidepressants such as Prozac, Celexa, and Zoloft. However, these drugs are potentially dangerous and are very costly. Doctors have been circling the idea of light therapy for patients with seasonal depression.
The most difficult thing that psychologists run into when making sure a research project is accurate, is making sure the test remains unbiased and ambiguous. In reality, most people tend to choose their own groups simply by doing what they would do anyway. Some people feel a compulsion to respond to a text or answer a phone call, and in extreme situations, searches or games. Although this is extremely dangerous, most of the information we have about this subject is from laboratory experiments, and the participants are all volunteers which further adds to the level of bias present in the research.
Senior Project Mid-Semester Paper: By Arthur Aldea I am researching the pros and cons of psychiatric medications and whether or not they should be the first source to treating mental illnesses. My research project - before my panel talk – covered a list of most common mental illnesses and the drugs associated with them. However, after meeting with the teachers that make up my panel I have realized that my project would be too broad and needs to be narrowed down to either one mental disorder or to a certain drug employed to treat mental illnesses. Therefore, thanks to the help of my panelists, I have decided change my research to one mental illness – depression. Why research depression and the medicine associated with it?
Task 1 Mental Disorders= is whereby an individual has a mental condition which leads to impairment of the mind and the functioning of that person. This can have an effect on the person’s emotion and personality. Depression Depression is an illness which involves the body, thoughts and mood; this can have an effect on normal functioning daily. There are emotional, motivational, cognitive and physical symptoms which are linked in with depression. There are two types of explanations of depression one is biological and the other is psychological.
The random sample, the participants in the study, should be as representative, as possible, of the population (McLeod, 2014). The more representative the sample, the more confident the researcher can be that the results, can be generalized to the population (McLeod, 2014). However, when sampling a population, if the population is very large, then a large sample is needed to be representative (McLeod, 2014). Likewise, if the population
In my opinion, conducting studies on many different people can definitely be challenging, because there are several types of behaviors to look into. For example, people that have been victims of a crime, court and law enforcement professionals, and members of the general public should not be hard to interact with, because there is nothing to feel irritated for. On the other hand, conducting studies on people that have been immoral (criminals) to society can be depressing. I can understand that even though it might be hard to study them it is still necessary, so we can learn how and why they behave in that certain way and that will help us come up with solutions to control certain crimes. The type of depressing studies I was referring to
The renaissance was a time of great innovation and is considered “the bridge between the Middle Ages and modern history” (wikipedia.org). The renaissance is considered a bridge because of how people started to think, and how it influenced literature, science, philosophy and art. At the time of the renaissance, the knowledge that was known about space and astronomy was limited and some theories were erroneous as well, such as the theory that planets in space orbited around Earth. Astronomy was limited because of the lack of inventions and technology. An example of limited technology at the time would be the telescope, which could only magnify images about three times.
RCT involves the random allocation of participants between experimental groups, whose members receive the treatment or other intervention, and control group whose members receive a standard or placebo treatment. Also, it is a gold standard in testing the efficacy of an intervention (UCL, 2011). To commence the article assessment is the view of the abstract. The heading and abstract of the study was well outlined, concise and focused on the sample population, methodology, data analysis as well as the result of the study.

Personal narrative Depression can be a monster and destroy the lives of people, but in my case it help me express my emotions better by helping me be more honest with myself. Depression has never been alien to me. Since middle school I have danced with the devil. I do not know what triggered it then, but it was mostly likely hormones. Despite that ever looming sadness over my head, I was still doing well in school, at least as best as I could do, I still hung out with people and I was still social when I had to be.
