It still exists today as a booming touristic city. In the colonial times, the name Charles Town had to be earned. Settlers and explorers had to adjust to and conquer the unknown terrain, make use of the unknown and the ferocious and survive the what seemed like an incurable disease. Only the most hardworking, lucky survivalists could make the colony Charles Town the money maker and the early capital of South Carolina. So much history has happened in Charles Town or today’s Charleston.
Tobacco, a cash crop that grew well in the sandy soil of the southern colonies, was introduced. The popularity of Tobacco products in England, made it a large trade between the two, and many landowners grew large crops of it. Farming and tobacco production became a large part of the southern economy. These crops led to many people becoming wealthy.
Dried fish was used to eat and the whale oil was used for lamps. The Southern Colonies were great for growing crops and exporting the crops. The Southern Colony was strong for growing crops because of its climate of having warm weather, which allowed the soil to be rich, which made the crops better. This proves that the geography and environment has a big impact on the economic activity of the two
Slave trade itself became the most popular industry that you could be in. The New England colonies, per contra, did not have fertile land to grow the tobacco and instead became known for its industry. They attempted to use slavery in the beginning but it didn’t quite work out the way should have and they banned it all together. This was an important factor as to how they developed differently from the south. The New England colonies grew up on fishing, trade, and manufacturing.
I would think using the word “racist” when discussing the events from the 1860s and the Civil War would be appropriate. Quite frankly, there is almost no way not to use it, It was a major contradicting issue back then. How could someone state, “God himself has made them usefulness as slaves, and requires us to employ them as such,” and “Our Heavenly Father has made us to rule, and the Negroes to serve,” (Pictures of Slavery and Anti-Slavery: Advantages of Negro Slavery and the Benefits of Negro Freedom Morally, Socially, and Politically by John Bell Robinson) and it not be considered racist. This is a prime example of someone judging and stereotyping a human being just because their skin is a different color.
In the Southern Colonies the geography was great for farming but, they had very thick vegetation. The climate was ideal and the soil was fertile to be able to be able to grow many cash
Early on, colonists discovered that large cash crops could be grown. Trade focused back toward the lucrative English market rather than among the colonies. The large-scale agriculture necessitated labor-intensive practices, giving rise to the importation of slaves. Tobacco, cotton and rice would come to dominate Southern agriculture. Manufactured goods were imported from England and the Southern Colonies returned tobacco, rice, hides and indigo.
In the New England colonies the soil grade was very poor and couldn’t be used to produce crops ( of much value) as the soil in the south. New England colonies turned to fishing, shipbuilding and whaling in efforts to save their economy The New England colonies manufactured and exported rum and other goods in exchange for African slaves from Africa. These slaves would come to America and work on the plantation fields in the south. About 10 million or more slaves were taken during the triangle trade and became apart of the southern ethnic count. The south also had European, Spanish and French.
There were long growing seasons. Also, the Southern Colonies had long plains, some hilly regions, long rivers, and low, flat farmland. Like the Southern and Middle Colonies, the New England Colonies had some hills, but that is the only similarity of climate and geography between all of these Colonies. The New England Colonies had short and mild summers and the winters were long and cold. They also had limited
The year is 1865, the Civil War has ultimately come to an end, thus eventually leading to a new chapter in American history. The Thirteenth Amendment, passed by former president Lincoln, permanently abolished slavery all throughout the Union and Confederate states. Undoubtedly, it became the solution to reconstruct the states back together, yet it brought misfortune to the freedmen and their families. As a result, great tension and hatred instantly emerged within Southern states as African Americans shared the land now equivalent to American citizens with rights. However, freedom came with a high price.
When originally coming to North America, the Atlantic Ocean served as a disadvantage and decelerated the growth of the colonies. Although the Atlantic connected Colonial America to the Old World, it also served as a barrier between the two. With the ocean nearby, colonists had access to goods such as tea, steel, and manufactured products; as a result, this usually kept colonists close to
It was April 12th,1861 when the Civil War in America officially began. The main argument from the South for secession was that they felt that the North was imposing their ideas on them starting from the abolitionists from decades prior. Though, arguably, a civil war was pending from the beginning. Tensions rising could be seen at four different time frames. First, when the North gained economic advantages over the South due to the different bases of their respective economies.
Most of the colonies in America were settled by the English, which makes them similar in many designs. However, there are a few aspects that differentiate between colonies, such as in the Chesapeake and New England regions. Reasons for settlement, religions, and geography all played an important role in the development of colonies in these regions. These conditions were natural and mostly subject to circumstances and conditions that were unchangeable. Nonetheless, no matter the modest causes, the effects were very substantial in helping to develop the uniqueness of each region.
Southern colonies society was built around their crops, slaves, and plantations. In the Northern colonies they built their society around religion and being fishing. There economy grew from fishing, mainly for with Cod. Religion played a huge role in the Northern colonies, it was a separation of church and state. The Middle colonies economy came from growing crops and fur trading with the Native Americans.
