Pros And Cons Of The US Grading System

The U.S. grading system has been ineffective for at least six years. For those of you that think otherwise let me make my point understandable. There is an overall grading system in the U.S. This system is “based on a fixed numeric scale” that changes with individual performance; There is nothing wrong with basing the number on individuality. Something that I consider wrong is categorizing. The students work individually throughout the year while they compete with the rest of their class to fall into a specific category. Categorizing impacts the students’ performance by making them feel “nominal” compared to other students that fall into higher academic categories. Also, teachers show favoritism towards their students and place a + or – next to their grade. The first thing that has changed over time is the way in which students view education. Learning has become a competition. This has happened due to the fact that grades are based on other student’s work and they must compete with each other in order to set good grades. “Studies show that students view good grades as an award”: Which causes students with low-grades to lose interest in their education. However, if someone proposed combining measures to represent a person’s physical condition, we would consider it laughable, but don’t to schools do that? Teachers in the United States combine scores from achievement, attitude, responsibility, behavior into a single grade, which averages ranking, which averages a GPA to enroll in college. These types of grading systems that have made changes may affect the way seniors had planned their last year, some of them might even cry in the hallways because they won’t be able to graduate any more. This is not just coming from me but from all of those students that were affected by those last minute
