There are many reasons that year-round school is a bad idea. According to Neil Kokemuller with everydaylife.globalpost.com, one main reason is that the constant on-and-off format of year-round school is disruptive to students. It takes some students, and even teachers some time to get used to the school environment. As soon as these students and teachers are acclimated and immersed in their studies and teachings, it is now time for a 15- to 20- day break. Saying that the summer gap is detrimental to students might be a valid point. However, saying that getting rid of the summer gap would fix the problem of students not retaining what they have learned is not valid, because the gaps that are included in year-round school also pose a problem. Having only two days off every week makes it less likely for students to forget the material they’ve learned, and it makes it easier for students to stay in the school “mode”. …show more content…

Many schools don’t instill a year-round calendar on behalf of athletics or extracurricular activities. Additionally, they are aware that students enjoy holding summer jobs and participating in traditional summer activities, like summer sports teams or summer internships (The Pros). Grace Chen brings up a good argument against the year-round schedule when she says that students who wish to attend college classes over the summer may not be able to do so with the year-round schedule in place. Teachers may also be affected by this schedule too, because their own educational advancement opportunities are also reduced. For example, educators may not be able to work towards a higher degree, attend professional development courses, or have their own summer side jobs if they wanted to, because now their summer break is taken from them
