Has the thought ever occurred about what it would be like to go to year-round school and not have a long summer vacation? Right, that does not sound like fun. People are debating whether year-round schooling is a good thing or not. Although certain people are for year-round schooling, they are wrong because year-round schooling creates greater financial costs and makes it difficult to find childcare.
Supporters of year-round schooling say that people that work or attend schools are more energized and that students do not forget as much with the shorter summer break. Many sources talk about the impact that year-round schooling has on school money, tourism, and jobs. According to Zubrzycki from Education Week, “Tourism and other industries that count on summer vacationers might suffer. High schoolers might be less able to get summer jobs. And the transition can bring added costs to school districts, which have to pay for (and sometimes install) utilities in buildings, stipends for teachers, or other associated expenses.” Schools with year-round schooling lose money because they have to keep the schools open all year round. During the summer and parts of the spring and fall, the air conditioning will have to be running. It will run longer than it does during the normal school year, causing the school to pay more money. The schools will have to pay for the electricity and water running throughout the whole year costing even more money. The teachers have to be paid year-round, adding to the cost. Costs with year-round schooling affect other areas including tourism of other cities and sites. Families go on their vacations during the long summer break. When the summer vacation gets taken away with year-round schooling, families will not want to go on as many vacations. Some kids in their family may be on different break times, so if they did want to go on vacation while some of their kids are on break, they will have to pull their other kids out of school. Jobs that hire teenagers during the summer time will be struggling because the kids will not have a longer summer break. The jobs may not hire the students because they will only have two week long breaks every so often, allowing the students not be able to work consistently at a job.
