The subject of changing school calenders to a year round program instead of having a three

month summer vacation has been a challenging decisions for parents and school boards to make. In the

past very few schools have tried switching usually making summer vacation four weeks long.

Afterwords they used then other two months and distributed them over the rest of the year. Schools

all around the world use this method, the outcome has been very successful. Although many other

countries around the world have adopted a year round school calender the United States has not.

Switching the calender is a great and beneficial idea. It will help students remember what they learn.

However this no longer applies to the majority of

the student body. Summer vacations have no reason to be three months long.

Not only can long summer vacation ruin the time students do not attend school but also takes

away a lot of time that could be spent in intervals instead of students attending school for months on

end. In fact this happens to a large amount of people when one works for a long time without a break

they become unhappy and frustrated. To paraphrase a paragraph from the New York Times, More

vacations are a good way to keep schools running smoothly, and everyone whom goes to or works at

school will be less likely to feel emotional stress, (MacFARQUHAR p.10). On a personal note I have

attended different school that use different calenders whether year-round or not, and I quickly noticed

that students who attended a school with the year-round program were all around more advanced.

The fact that year-round school systems have many benefits is clearly shown by principals and

teachers, but not everyone will except that. Parents have made some very well thought out
