Introduction: Two literary works that can be analyzed through a psychoanalytic lens are the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. EVIDENCE (LI & PC): "I feel like if I disappeared tomorrow, no one would notice," EXPLANATION: This quote perceives themself if they fell off the face of the Earth, no one would ask where they went or care. They think of themselves as rubbish because they don't feel as if anyone cares about them. While these works differ in terms of genre, time period and plot, they share common themes and motifs that can be examined using psychoanalytic theory. Lord Capulet sets up a arranged mariage an Juliet won’t stand for it. She would never marry a 24-29 year old man as a thirtteen year old girl. Also she has her eyes set on Romeo. SUBTOPIC Sentence (Speak) 2: In “ Speak”, Malinda thinks and feels as if she isn’t wanted anywhere and especially at school. EVIDENCE (LI & PC): “I am outcast” (P.4) EXPLANATION: Malinda goes to school and no one from years before would speak with her and she felt like she did something wrong and she wasn’t liked. Juliet doesn’t go through this exactly but Juliet doesn’t feel like she is listened too just how Malinda feels as if she if spoken to by anyone. Closing Sentence: Malinda and Juliet have alot of symalarities between them with how their parents treat them, with aggressive tone and anger in their voices. Body Topic Sentence B: In “Romeo and Juliet” and “Speak” they both have parent child relations were the parents is aggressive and the child feels invisible or their not being heard.
