Professionally, it is my intent to develop lasting relationships that will provide the support needed to be successful in this field. Finally, I would like to give as many children, as many people who are in need of a voice the chance to be
I remain positive and energetic because I always look forward to challenges in life. As ex professional athlete, I always set realistic targets and time scale for myself and others I teach. This method ensures that you concentrate on your targets and remain focused on tasks ahead step by step. I have a different way of training and teaching. I focus on psychology using mind over matter as I believe every person can do any given task.
It was under the most delicate of circumstances, when I realized what I was born to do for the rest of my life. It was march 2007, my grandfather was suffering from pneumonia and due to his deteriorating condition he was hospitalized. I had flown in from Toronto to be by his side. Sitting anxiously by his bedside with tears in my eyes wondering if I could do anything to make my grandfather feel better, I watched doctors come and go , updating us on his blood reports, EKGs, chest x-rays, ABGs, and at the same time constantly counseling my concerned family members. As they explained what they were doing to bring my grandfather to the path of recovery, I watched in utter fascination.
I am studying a Psychology degree and this field I have chosen really interests me because I have a passion for helping people. Generally, I am that type of person to put other's happiness and well-being before my own, because it makes me feel like I have a sense of purpose. Also, since I was a little girl I have always been so fascinated with the way people interact, behave, think and feel. I always asked 'why?' and I still do to this very day.
I've never joined a program related to mental health, so I think this will be an amazing opportunity for me to pursue a career in mental health! I know some basics of psychology as an AP psychology student, but I hope this program will help guide me in the right direction for what specific path I wish to take. I'm also quite interested in your integrated support system, especially the workshops and college access planning! I wish to go to college, but I'm not quite sure where to go or the specifics of what to do- I really do believe this will give me the right opportunities to adjust and find the right college to suit me. I view this as a transition period from childhood to adulthood, and I'm excited to become part of a community of people
Ultimately, I am in this field because I want to make changes, help, and impact others to become
Personal Statement – Harvard University Clinical Psychology PhD Sitting at the dinner table when I was young, listening to my parents rattle off at each other in medical jargon, drove me crazy. I was too small to comprehend the terms they were using, so I started a journey to to understand them that has led me here, twenty-something years later. I was born to a world full of physicians. Almost everyone in my family is a physician, specializing in various areas.
Throughout my undergraduate career, I have learned more and more about the field of psychology. I have been able to interact with the field from cognitive, clinical, social, biological, and developmental perspectives, and have quickly realized that my passion lies with clinical science. I am especially interested in investigating the effectiveness of various types of psychotherapy, as well as how this varies for different mental illnesses. For example, are some forms of therapy better for depression than for other illnesses? Perhaps there are some therapies that are actually worse for certain illnesses.
Life has its twists and turns, but my overall life goal is simple, help others. I want to make an impact on others life, even if it is a small change. For instance, being able to hold a pencil is the difference between a student being able to graduate from Kindergarten and not be able to continue on to first grade. Being a Pediatric occupational therapist will help me make an impact on children at a very young age. Even small changes can have a large impacts, which is why I want to be that change for others.
I sat down and began to think about my purpose and I asked myself some questions. What is your end goal? Who do you want to help? How are you going to help these individuals? After answering these questions, I decided that I need more education to accomplish these goals.
Research in psychology opens the platform to endless possibilities. For example, research into brain plasticity and the knowledge we gain, may aid us in reversing the effects of dementia. Psychology can give us the power to not only interpret and appreciate, but also adapt and modify things we did not once think were possible. Religion is a human phenomenon and therefore it is open to be studied by psychologists. It appeared to me from the onset that a religious cognition was the reason for belief in God and I was fascinated to learn the reasons why so many millions of people persisted on holding onto beliefs that may seem irrational or do not comply with empirical evidence.
Shalaine Mullins Graduate Essay - The Chicago School of Professional Psychology December 11, 2015 As a psychology major, I have learned that we simply do not pick our majors or interests, they pick us. I have learned that we are the physical delivery, and through research we find the program that aligns with us. Thus, the baby psychologist within us is born, and through research we seek to understand our first patient, ourselves. I grew up wanting to understand the different styles of behavior, why only certain children were accepted into popular groups, and why others were not.
The word 'Psychology' translates, "study of the soul" in Latin. The study of how we work, think, behave, and function has fascinated me since late childhood, and in recent times my desire to study criminal psychology/criminology has only grown. I started to learn that every individual faces their own unique problems, and nothing in life can be simple or 'normal'. But then what is normal? It really amazes me how, throughout the world, we each have unique and exceptional ideas of how to interact with one another and behave in society.
The more I don’t know, the more I know. The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology. My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools.
In five years, I hope to be in college, studying about something I'm interested in. I want to get into a good college with a great psychology program where I can learn enough about it so I can turn it into a progression. One thing I've noticed is that it's hard to find a hobby which is directly related to psychology, unlike other professions where your hobbies can be very similar to what you would be doing in that job. I believe that given the environment I was born into, where I have had to help many people to get through tough periods in their lives, I could be a good psychologist. This being my reality, I have grown to enjoy listening to people’s problems and difficulties and trying to help them to the best of my abilities.
