For some time the city of Detroit has faced major execution and policy errors regarding public transportation for the citizens of this city. The wait time and the availability of metro transit options is a major problem for those who are without their own source of transportation and rely on the transit systems.This should be a major concern for policymakers and the Mayor because it seems as though the citizens in Detroit are being neglected and could cause a bad moral look for our city and also omits what would be revenue coming into the cities from more workers(salary taxes), bus fares revenue, and less likely but property taxes from the now hired workers they may purchase homes within our city. Some of the pros of this act that it ensured funding for multiple things including highway funding program (an increase of 5.6% in funding) and current transit funding (an increase of 10.6% in funding). This policy hasn’t always been a problem, really it has been a very beneficial for the start of the rebuild of our transportation system, but their only a few execution errors that hold Metro Detroit transit back from fully flourishing.(Infrastructure USA)
One of the biggest criticisms of public transportation is that ridership is too low to really support the expenses of the public transit system. However, the demand for low-quality transit is declining, but like any other business, the demand for this product would increase if better service is provided. Also, according to research done by Todd Litman of Victoria Transit Policy Institute, the vast majority of people in a given region cannot, will not, or prefer not to drive. Inclusive by the standard of making it more of a regional thing instead of just a city thing, being able to connect the metro area to suburban areas to help those who need it get to work and not be limited to opportunities only available in the nearby area or force them to walk many miles just to get to work. Innovative by adding newer, more efficient modes of transportation such as rail cars and things of that nature to introduce newer, better quality transit to attract new riders and give another alternative to those dependent on public transportation.(UrbanWIre) Action Proposal A few things that I learned throughout my research is that their seems to be a correlation with the expansion of the routes that's going to connect the urban and suburban areas to create new opportunities for both parties. Also, it seems to be something to be said about the quality of the transit services provided. So, in light of the FAST act, I would propose to just give the people what they want, cleaner and more efficient transit systems, and what they need, a bridge connecting the two separate areas to open more doors to opportunities that was not there
