Publix has increased from a single store to over 1,077 supermarkets with over 160,000 associates. They are continuously hailed as the number one supermarket for customer satisfaction and one of Fortune’s 100 and 500 best companies to work for. With continuous growth, it is important to evaluate their legal and ethical policies (“We Are Publix”, n.d.). Publix values their employees and indicate their employees are the company. Their Human Resource Representatives ensure their ethical policy is monitored by assisting in defining standards for the delivery of phenomenal customer service.
The business we chose to focus our project on is Publix Supermarkets. On Sept. 6, 1930, founder George Jenkins opened his first store, called Publix Food Store, in Winter Haven Florida. Today Publix has grown to be Florida’s largest employer with 168,500 employees and run 1,080 stores. Total sales in 2013 were 28.9 billion, relatively large for a regional corporation. Their mission statement is “To be the premier food quality retailer in the world,” and they’re doing an excellent job at it.
Knowing they stood out from their competitors, and that they brought a newer outlook on the “typical” grocery store did not stop them from introducing consumers to their eccentric and unique styles of customer service and products. The tactics used by supermarkets to increase the chances of customers impulse buys vary depending on the store and product. The majority of supermarkets attempt to expose you to the most amount of products as possible by using displays at the ends of aisles for high selling products, using aisles near the entrance for typical impulse buys, and giving shelf space to frequently selling products. Publix takes care of their employees by having great insurance providers to keep the employees feeling good and keeping them in good shape. Also, Publix gives their employees a FREE share of stock for a certain amount of money that is earned just for working for them! There are other little things that Publix helps with too, but these are the main benefits of the company and rarely do you find a company as good as this one that gives certain things for free, has great insurance, or gives the employees a good retirement plan. Publix is a grocery store that I am familiar with in Huntsville. Publix stands out from its competitors like Kroger, Piggy Wiggly, Wal-Mart, and Whole Food Market for many reasons. For starters, Publix has a unique rewards program. For example, the Publix baby club and Publix Paw are free to join and include monthly savings and expert tips on baby and pet items. Publix also has two for one coupon which in contrast most of their competitors do not have available.

The biggest differences I observed between the grocery stores I visited were found in the check-out lines. Walmart Neighborhood Market was the only grocery store with a self-check-out which I think is a great feature. Publix and Trader Joe’s each have friendly staff working at each of their check-out lines. In addition to the regular check-out lines, Publix also has an express line which is helpful when you’re checking out with only a few items. Check-out lines are another great opportunity for building social skills.
Carroll’s global corporate social responsibility pyramid is broken down into four categories philanthropic, ethical, legal, and economic responsibilities (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2013) however; by means of the corporate social responsibility pyramid a business can increase revenue along with obeying laws. Usage of the corporate social responsibility pyramid is a wide-ranging approach of saying doing right and making money at the same time. I would place Whole Foods in the philanthropic responsibilities category for the reason that the brand takes satisfaction in their customers, employees, suppliers, and investors, granted their stakeholders are dedicated to the corporation. In the recent years more and more companies in the retail and food industry are concerned about the environmental consequences of their action and also the social ethics for the people involved in the production process. This is a shift from the philanthropic actions companies used to take in 1970’s and by following basic international standards to a ‘business case’ perspective of CSR (Customer Social Responsibility). According to the World Business Council for Sustainability Develpoment ( WBCSD) CSR is: ‘’ the commitment of business to contribute to sustainable economic development, working with employees, theirfamilies, the local community and society at large to improve their quality of life’’ (World Bank, 2002)
