I have learned many useful and historical topics during government class this Semester. These topics have helped me to better understand how our government came to be, how our Government is run today, and everything in between. One major section we went over as a class was the purpose of our U.S. Government. Secondly, there is what it means to be an American. Then the third subject I am going to be discussing is the importance of being a part of the American Government Process. Without the knowledge of these key governmental concepts, the average American Citizen can walk around absolutely lost, having no input whatsoever on how our democratic country is run day in and day out. Establishing justice makes things fair for all people by giving them equal rights. Insuring “domestic Tranquility” insures that our country will be a safe place within the Borders of our Country. For the most part this is done through Law enforcement and the District, appellate and Supreme Courts. Then there is Providing for the Common defense which is pretty self explanatory. The United States Military handles this job. The general welfare what is best for our the well being of the citizens of the United States. This term means that the people have the power, the government needs the people and their decisions to govern. One example of this would be voting on whether or not there should be improvement to certain things in out city. They are paid for by raising taxes in a community. The people will vote on something like this to find out if it will pass. For the most part, if the people use what they will be paying for, or if they just think it is a good idea to make those specific implications they will vote yes. The problem is that in this situation there are a lot of people who would be concerned about having to pay more for something that they wouldn’t use or just plain out don’t agree with. Something very close to this happened in Whitehall when there was going to be a pool and exercise center built, but it did not pass. In today’s world being a United States Citizen means that you get to have popular sovereignty. This looks like people that have the right to vote for city implications, governmental representatives and the president. But popular sovereignty looks like people who actually participate in voting and making other decisions in a way that they think would be best for the country. Without the the people’s input, America would not be democratic and therefore would not have popular
