Race has become an integral part of our society, determining how we act, where we live, how educated we are; all aspects of life are touched by the constructs of race. Media has come to play an essential role in this, "perpetuating the effects of... historical oppression and... contributing to African-Americans' continuing status as second-class citizens. " As the concept of race has come to develop in this country, it has become something that has rooted itself into the minds and lifestyles of those across it, media acting as the medium to which stereotypes and ideas regarding race are promoted and justified.
For years we have bared witness to the misrepresentation and complete exclusion of people of color from television and film. Black people in media are often reduced to either stereotypical roles, insignificant sub-characters, or are just left out altogether. With white studio heads running Hollywood, the entertainment industry has been suffering from collective amnesia for over 60 years with its constant need to erase and discredit black faces. Not only are people of color not fairly represented in Hollywood, but they are often times not rewarded for the work that they actually do in television and film. At last year’s Emmy Awards ceremony, actress Viola Davis became the first black actress to receive the award for best actress in a drama series in the entire history of the awards ceremony.
Second of all, Stacey isn 't telling the truth. A simple Google search will show there are plenty of non-blacks who win BET and Image awards. This is the very reason why organizations catering to minorities like BET awards, NAACP, exist, at least to advance the causes of other minorities that are constantly overlooked by the mainstream media. Otherwise, if we did not have these awards shows, how would the talents of these black actors be recognized in mainstream America or institutions when awards show like the Oscars constantly refuse to acknowledge them.
December the 6th, 1865 marks the end of slavery and white supremacy. A glance at the 21st century America manifests otherwise. Racism is an ongoing issue that contributes largely to class boundaries within significant aspects such as economy, education and society of the United States, making people of color inferior to white people. The key components that construct a country into greatness are economy, education and society. The inequality and injustice present in these interlinked components, bound by social class hierarchy, can lead to desisting the full potential to be a globally respectable nation.
In these days, media is a big part in peoples lives and some may say it consumes people into their phones, televisions and radios. However, these forms of media can get the word around about a serious issue that needs attention. This was true especially during World War II and the Civil Rights Movement. Though media can be distracting at times it can help get people to stand up and help solve problems. Therefore, media serves as a good transport for prejudice and discrimination, because it is by media that the two concepts became popular. Embracing diversity in the media is important because it will shed light on the importance of protecting against racial stereotyping. Racial stereotyping is a well know problem that all minorities have faced. Racial stereotyping is when a person has preconceived notions on a person because they are of a certain race. A great deal of stereotyping stems from the media’s lack of diversity that has casted stereotypes towards minorities.
