Nowadays, numerous Americans are being persuaded into spending their money on unnecessary products. In today's modern world advertisements are practically everywhere we turn. If we Americans pay close attention we will notice that there are many different techniques that are being used. According to Ann McClintock, "Name Calling, Glittering Generalities, Transfer, Testimonial, Plain Folks, Card Stacking, and Bandwagon" are some techniques being used for advertisements (698-701). In addition, Tesla, Toyota and Old Navy are all companies that encourage Americans into buying their products by using some of those 7 propaganda techniques. In the advertisement, there is a black vehicle. The black vehicle symbolizes wealth and power. For example, most Americans will notice many celebrities owning black vehicles. In addition, many Americans are also aware of entrepreneurs owning black vehicles. Therefore, many women purchase the black vehicle because they want to seem professional. In the advertisement there are some shiny spots on the car. The vehicle seems very valuable because of the shininess and that urges women into acquiring it. Furthermore, there is some colorful fog around the black vehicle. The fog around the black vehicle seems to vary between dark and bright colors. Darker colors seem to be at war with the bright colors. This war is all about good versus evil and that brings excitement to women. The colorful fog also represents magic. In the colored fog, you can notice the color blue. The color blue ordinarily represents importance. The most compelling evidence is that the color blue is everywhere. We Americans can see the color blue in the ocean, the sea, the skies, the clouds, birds, fruits, and flowers. In addition, the color purple is also visible in the advertisement. Ordinarily, the color purple associates with royalty and luxury. Most women purchase this vehicle because they want to feel royal. Finally, The black Avalon appears to have extremely dark tinted windows. The extremely dark tinted windows symbolize mystery and that encourage women into buying this car. According to Ann McClintock, for glittering generalities "advertisers surround their products with attractive-and slippery-words and phrases" (698). Therefore, many people can say that Toyota uses glittering generalities because Toyota uses phrases like "Radically New, game changer, and future of driving".
