Lastly, possibly one of the biggest considerations before investing in a company is their earnings per share; Kohl’s earnings per share is $3.48 while JCPenney’s is a -1.68. Anthony Glass is merchant from Natchez, Mississippi (Baird and Goble 54). The book written by Baird and Goble, “Oklahoma a history,” has a map showing this explorers routes on page 49. Glass’s journey only takes part of a small portion of this map. However, he doesn’t fall short of making an impact in history with his traveling. In the year of 1808 and 1809, Anthony Glass led a group of merchants to the Red River region (O’Dell).
Campanella: Roy Campanella was the Brooklyn Dodgers all-star catcher from 1948 until 1957. Campanella’s baseball career ended early due to a car accident in 1958. His car skidded on a wet spot on the road, crashed into a telephone pole, and his car was overturned, fracturing two of his vertebrae. He survived, but was paralyzed from the shoulders down and never played baseball again, causing the Dodgers to lose their all-star catcher. Campanella had four other siblings and had four jobs by age nine in order to pay for family needs.
Drew Hayden Taylor writes, in his 1991 essay, about his life being a First Nations man but looking “Pretty like a white boy.” He writes about how he witnessed and heard so much racism towards First Nations people because people thought he was Caucasian. Taylor tells us all through out his essay that he is judged by both races for not “looking the part” of a First Nations man. Unbroken is a biography by Laura Hillenbrand about Louie Zamperini’s entire life. Louie Zamperini is a son of Italian Immigrants that moved to Torrance, California. He starts out as a problem child that would steal, drink and smoke, but he eventually straightens out through sports and became an Olympian later in life. After he went to the Olympics, he gets drafted into World War 2.

Slavery was a severely cruel time in the United States before the Civil War. One of the known slave owners during that time was Colonel Edward Lloyd. The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass by Frederick Douglass describes the struggle of most African Slaves under the supervision of so-called masters. It was rare to find a pure hearted slaveholder at the time; most of them could not care less of the slaves. All they wanted was fame and money.
On the night of October 6, 1998, Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, robbed, brutally beaten, and tied to a fence left to die by Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson. The book takes place in the drive-through town of Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. The members of the Tectonic Theater Project investigate and conduct over two hundred interviews in order to get more first-hand information about the murder. The author uses literary elements to discuss political and social issues when interviewing Jedadiah Schultz, Marge Murray, and when someone sent an email to Philip Dubois, the President of the University of Wyoming. Social issues are first discussed when interviewing Jedadiah Schultz, a 19-year-old university student.

In this short story, the government technologically tried to make everyone equal. That includes looks, intelligence, ability, to do certain things, etc.
Imagine being silenced, criticized, and trapped. Harrison Bergeron and China experience this every day. Harrison Bergeron is about censorship from a strict government, and a man who tries to overcomes it; in China's government of filters and sensors which is better known as "the Great Firewall," is a great example as China’s citizens who try to overwhelm it. Harrison Bergeron presented a diverse perspective of the future, or better yet, of today. Society is slowly emerging into a Harrison Bergeron-like society.
Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have an extensive history between the 1800s and 1900s. The first HBCU, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, was established in 1837 (Palmer, 2018). During the era of segregation, HBCUs were founded to provide higher education opportunities to Black students who were denied access to mainstream institutions due to racist policies and practices. The Morrill Act of 1890 played a significant role in the establishment and growth of HBCUs by requiring states to provide funding and land grants to Black colleges (NCES, 2020). As a result, many HBCUs were established across the United States.
