In “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, the author uses diction like abstract diction and details by explaining what he exactly wants in life to demonstrate Walter and his dream. Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.

To understand the true meaning and emotion behind Sam Cooke’s revolutionary song “A Change Is Gonna Come”, we must first understand Cooke himself as a musical artist and as a person, as well as understanding the Civil Rights Movement and the role it played in the songs creation. Sam Cooke was one of eight children born in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He began singing at an early age in his church, because his father was the Baptist minister at the time. After some time had passed, Cooke and his family relocated to Chicago. There he began performing gospel music with his siblings.
The opinion article “Black Lives Matter: A Movement Built on Lies” by John Perazzo represents the Black Lives Matter movement (which is referred to as BLM within this essay) and the people associated with it in an intensely negative light. Through the use of several rhetorical devices, Perazzo dramatically conveys his deep resentment for the group. By doing this, he aims to persuade the audience against Black Lives Matter and to share his antagonistic views. After all, the portrayal of the movement is a significant factor in the effectiveness of the text as a whole. Perazzo employs a variety of argumentative strategies to lead to the overall exceptionally slanderous and negative portrayal of Black Lives Matter as a group, which in turn damages his argument’s larger message about the movement’s goals.

Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
In Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish, he states that “[a] real subjection is born mechanically from a fictitious relation” (202). That is, to say the gaze of those observing you is a chiasmus. Chiasmus is a verbal pattern where the second half of an expression is balanced against the first with revised. For example, the prisoners in the panopticon , which is a circular structure that has light thrust up each individual person, so it makes it extremely difficult to tell if a guard is looking at you. Basically, the idea of this structure was for the prisoners to fear and internalize the gaze.

Welcome, my fellow Americans. It is truly an honor to be standing in front of you all today and to be chosen as your Democratic nominee for the 1936 United States presidential election. When I came to office in 1932, it was a time of depression, economically and mentally. Throughout the past four years, we have worked together as a nation to dig ourselves out of the worst of this Great Depression. While we have made solid progress, there is still much to be done to finish off the job and restore our nation to economic success.
“Honey, you are changing that boy’s life.” A friend of Leigh Anne’s exclaimed. Leigh Anne grinned and said, “No, he’s changing mine.” This exchange of words comes from the film trailer of an award-winning film, The Blind Side, directed by John Lee Hancock, released on November 20th, 2009. This film puts emphasis on a homeless, black teen, Michael Oher, who has had no stability or support in his life thus far.
Whenever I hear the word politics, I think of the generalization of the word. I do not just think about the presidential elections because it is just a small part of it. Politics means citizens argue or converse about issues, such as abortion, gun control and illegal aliens. It also is for individuals to dispute over the concerns of citizens in order to gain power. Politics also means the activities of the government such as law making.
After completing my module 1 assessment, I learned a lot about different strategies to analyze rhetorical situations. I learned how important exigence and purpose are when persuading an audience. The reading helped me understand how to interpret the video. Prior to reading, I did not understand how to look at things rhetorically. The reading allowed me to understand that everywhere you look you are being persuaded of something.
