Foundations of Reading Assessment and Intervention Research Paper
Within this paper I will discuss the best practices for reading assessment and instruction. I will talk about the purpose of informal and formal assessments. Will briefly mention how informal and formal assessments data is used to differentiate instructions for all students including working with ELL students and children with special needs.
Assessment
Assessment is the process of gathering and discussing information from multiple sources in order to develop an understanding of what students know, understand, and what they can do. The first stage is the Silent Stage. Within this stage communication with other classmates is very limited. The student has minimal comprehension at this point. The student can nod to say yes or no. There is vey limited or no oral language during this stage. Students can last anywhere from 0 to 6 months in this stage, however, young children can last longer in this period than student in later elementary (DeVries, 2011).
Then we have the Early Production Stage. In this stage DeVries (2011) continues to state different key characteristics during this stage. During this period, students begin to use keywords and familiar phrases. They begin to develop different aspects of social English. Students can last in this stage anywhere from 6 months to a year.
Next we have the Productive Language Stage. During this stage the students has gained good comprehension skills. They are able to make simple sentences but will make grammar and pronunciation errors. The students may seem to be regressing but that is because they overgeneralize language rules. The approximate time frame can be anywhere from one to three
