1. Describe the language development of the child observed.
This is an important time in a child’s life when it comes to their language development. During this time children’s language abilities are growing tremendously. School systems play an important role in the development of children’s language and literacy progression (214). Teachers begin to teach their students how to communicate better, learn how to read and write efficiently, and learn a larger vocabulary than they have had through reading (214). Teachers have an important job in the school systems to teach the students these important literacy development skills like how to read and write. “Children’s vocabulary increases from an average of about 14,000 words at age 6 to an average of about 40,000 words by age 11 (214).” This proves that middle and late childhood is an important time for these students to learn literacy skills. One way to teach these skills is by reading. Reading increases vocabulary and builds comprehension skills. Children also are learning how to write. They learn important information like the mechanics (214). This is important to learn before a student begins to write writing assignments. The girl that I observed had no problem with the writing aspect of her assignment. The only thing she struggled with was what to write about. The teacher could have given them a five minute pre-writing option in order to avoid this problem. Also with the child’s vocabulary increasing, their communication skills are getting better. They are able to speak well developed sentences than they could before. The student I observed was able to carry on several conversations throughout the time I observed her. She could communicate very well with her teacher, as well as her
