“The school lunch program, begun in the 1970s as a result of bipartisan federal legislation, has been by most measures an enormous success. For lots of poor families it’s become a way to count on at least getting one decent meal into their children, and when it disappears it’s catastrophic,” (page 224) In the essay “Schools out for the Summer” Quindlen writes about the problem of hunger in the USA.
First Day Assignment I believe that year-round school would be best for Oskaloosa High School. I think it could help more in the long run. I hope this paper will help or change your perspective on year-round school. I would like to change Oskaloosa High School to year-round school.
Children who grow up in poverty are faced with a series of issues which impact their education and social atmosphere. In both the school and home setting these children lack the proper resources which they need to succeed academically. Across the country, people have begun creating programs which aim to help children in poverty succeed, despite their socioeconomic status. These programs range from after-school reading, tutoring services, charter schools, and free summer programs. All of these programs provide children with extra academic help which they may not be receiving in school or at home.
In “The Little School” by Alicia Partnoy, Alicia shares brief memories from her time as a prisoner in an Argentinian concentration camp. These memories share the experiences and thoughts of Alicia as she spends her time blindfolded with other prisoners in a room,Waiting for anything to happen, with the constant threat of torture and death lingering in the air. In these experiences, Alicia demonstrates the recurring idea of “helping those who need it is more important than helping yourself”. An example of Alicia helping others is shown in the chapter “Latrine”.

“The National Summer Learning Association cites decades of research that shows that it can take anywhere from 8 to 13 weeks at the beginning of every school year for teachers to get their students back up to speed and ready to learn the new grades material” (Lynch). However, there is also evidence that supports how year round school is makes no difference in learning. The same article posted, “A study released in 2007 by The Ohio State University found that there are really no differences in learning between students who attend school year round and those who are on a traditional schedule” (Lynch). A lot of people say that year round school can help with education because it is year round
Lynda Barry in her work The Sanctuary of School, wrote about her life as a kid with a toxic family life where she relied on school to be a place she feels secure. She tried to escape from her toxic family by going to school; was the only way for her to relieve her mind. The school granted her freedom to draw and provided her a safe place to stay. Painting and drawing was the only activity that made her happy. By doing these activities were the only way to express herself.
Some students don’t want school to start later because it messes up homework time, sports, and seeing friends after school but, I think school should start later because meaning that school will start a little later than what they usually do and giving more time for the kids. The kids won’t have issues getting up in the morning, their mood would be better, and can even get better grades on all of their assignments. Won’t have issues getting up in the morning Coming from the article “Should School Start Later?” a young girl by the name of Jilly Dos Santos tells us how she has no problem getting up out of bed because of how the school starts later. “I have no issues getting up now.”
In 1954 students in schools started integrating to other schools, before this big event, kids were put in separate schools. This was due to their race. R.V. Cassil wrote the book, The First Day of School which revolves around two members of a family (brother and sister) that are forced to go to an all white school. The book starts off with John messing with his bowl of cereal, while talking to his mother about why his sister, Audrey, is not down stairs yet.
