I think that employees who recieve tips shoould not be paid the same minimum wage as other employees because if that happened, then the prices of the menu would go up and they would lose business. Also some of the employees would get shortened shifts and maybe even laid off even if they have worked very hard. I think that these employees already get paid enough as it is with their tips. If this really went through, there would be a lot of problems for the owner to deal with at Waffle Now. First off, I think this is mainly a bad idea because the resturaunt will lose alot of customers due to the menu items going up in prices.
“Why Tipping Is Wrong,” an article found in the New York Times discusses the issue of lower minimum wage for tipped workers. Writer, Saru Jayaraman, the director of the Food Labor Research Institute at Berkeley, argues for the reformation of the law that allows a lower minimum wage for tipped workers. She presents her argument by targeting those who go to restaurants, lawmakers, the waiters/waitresses, and even the restaurant itself. By targeting this specific audience, she is able to speak to those who interact with those working in the industry and those who will be able to make a change in order to fix it. Rhetorical devices are vital in order for arguments to be successful.
The authors arguable point goes on to talk about the problem with tipping and how the “less discretion you have in the matter, the more useless it is as an economic incentive” (Lewis 21). Lewis’ third point was not a hundred percent convincing “The Case Against Tipping” was a great essay; however, it lacked statistics. If the author gave more statistical facts the essay would in the end be more logical and the author would have better luck pulling in the readers. The examples located in this essay were organized quite well, into a chronological order; therefore, made the entire essay more interesting. Michael included both pathos and ethos into this essay which brought life and significance to each example he presented.
The $2.13 per hour figure is true, but waiters/waitresses never see that amount. It is required statewide that any minimum wage employee earn at least $9 (“Massachusetts Law about Minimum Wage”). No matter how complex the author makes the convention of tipping seem, no one is getting paid $2.13 in actuality. The only purpose of using that statistic is to exacerbate the idea of feeling sorry for these individuals. Following that reference, the author sets blame upon management and restaurant chain executives.
Is minimum wage fair? You tell me... There is always a big debate over the subject of minimum wage. Should it be increased or decreased or should it just stay the same? Minimum wage shouldn’t be heightened, because people who are in poverty should just be able to try and better themselves.
Try to visualize that you are a college athlete, you would have a busy schedule. To start off your day, you wake up for an early morning practice. Following your early morning practice is all of your classes, that usually last all afternoon. After your classes are over, you finish your day with another practice that usually lasts until the end of the night. You now have to follow this schedule for six or seven days out of the week for the entire school year, sounds exhausting right?

Paying College Athletes There are several reasons why college athletes should receive a form of payment. The athletes always seem to be practicing, which means that they are almost always busy, leaving little time for anything else. Additionally, they have to go to their classes and study in order to participate in that particular sport. In contrast, giving the athletes money could potentially be a bad idea. Some athletes might receive more because their sport may generate more money.
Oftentimes when watching a sports program such as Sportscenter or Outside the Lines one question that is hotly debated is that of whether or not college athletes should be paid. Along with already receiving free college, paying these athletes would be very hard to control. Critics may ask; what sports get paid? who gets paid what? And how will school afford to pay these athletes?
Life can be hard when you have to manage two lives. College athletes are living the life as full-time students and full-time athletes. This can be a very difficult task for college students. It is my position that college athletes (also sometimes called student athletes) should get paid while others might say that they should not be paid. I believe they should be paid because with their school life and athletic life they don’t have time for jobs.
Minimum wage should not be raised because it is not an income that someone sold live off of. Minimum wage in the country is currently $7.25 but some states have changed it in a way that is way too much. For example Washington state currently has the highest minimum wage at $9.32 that’s a $2.07 increase to the current amount minimum wage. Seattle is currently considering to raise their minimum wage to $15 it’s understandable that the city is very large and things cost more money but if they raise minimum wage to $15 that will only bring inflation causing things to cost only more money than it already does. If there is one thing that should not be done to the country it is to cause inflation.
The point of a minimum wage is to help the poor to stay out of poverty. Statistically about 80% of The United States of America is covered by this law minimum wage, but minimum wage isn 't the same everywhere you go the overall national minimum wage is $7.25, but now some places have bumped up their minimum wage to higher. The reason for people having a higher wage is to recruit more workers or just simply because the job is harder and requires either more skill or some sort of a degree. Also just some states in general require its bosses to pay more.
A higher minimum wage will give workers the desire to work more, improving labor productivity levels. A server at a local restaurant was asked a couple of questions in an interview conducted a few weeks ago regarding a minimum wage increase. She was asked if the minimum wage were to be increased, would she have more of a desire to go to work? She responded, “the minimum wage for servers is significantly lower than it is for non-tipped workers, so on days where I don’t receive a lot of tips, it forces me to make sacrifices I would rather not make, which in turn, brings down my desire to go to work and work hard. So yes, if the minimum wage were to be increased, I would enjoy going to work and doing my absolute best.”
Are prisons not paying people enough? If so, should prisoners be paid minimum wage? The answer is no, prisoners should not be paid minimum wage for multiple reasons. The taxes and cost would be much to high, they’re in prison for a reason and a punishment is well deserved and if prisons paid high amounts then people could possibly go their on purpose.
