Oftentimes when watching a sports program such as Sportscenter or Outside the Lines one question that is hotly debated is that of whether or not college athletes should be paid. Along with already receiving free college, paying these athletes would be very hard to control. Critics may ask; what sports get paid? who gets paid what? And how will school afford to pay these athletes? The problem of paying athletes is bigger than ever. According to the College Board the average cost of tuition and fees for 2015-16 at a private school was $32,405. The average scholarship is $36,070 for Division one football. College is a privilege. This is yet another reason athletes should not get paid. There is many athletes who without the scholarships would not be able to afford college. The scholarship allows them to continue their education. For example, Richard Sherman, who is from Compton where many people don't graduate high school let alone go to college, went to Stanford for free because of his football scholarship. A football scholarship allowed him to receive an education from a top notch school. I believe this is enough of a compensation for playing a game. College sports are not mandatory and athletes play sports for love of game. Paying athletes would take away from integrity of these games. Gone would be the days of athletes playing for the sake of the game. People would just be playing for money if they got paid. This would turn College sports into minor league professional sports. Many people prefer college sports because they are played purely for a love of the game. There is no drama in college sports like professional sports regarding contracts and money. Personally, I prefer watching the NCAA in every single sport rather than professional sports due to
