In the letter, "Server Wages cannot Be Increased," it states that the restaurant could end up closing down and lose many customers due to the prices. This would all be because of the servers who wanted the federal minimum wage. For example, if Waffle Now decided to pay their servers a higher wage, then the boss will need to raise the prices of the menu items in order to pay their servers. Eventually this could lead to drastic consequences such as the restaurant getting shut down, or employees getting laid off.
In some cases, the company may choose to pay its employees more than the minimum wage in order to remain competitive and attract top
“Why Tipping Is Wrong,” an article found in the New York Times discusses the issue of lower minimum wage for tipped workers. Writer, Saru Jayaraman, the director of the Food Labor Research Institute at Berkeley, argues for the reformation of the law that allows a lower minimum wage for tipped workers. She presents her argument by targeting those who go to restaurants, lawmakers, the waiters/waitresses, and even the restaurant itself. By targeting this specific audience, she is able to speak to those who interact with those working in the industry and those who will be able to make a change in order to fix it. Rhetorical devices are vital in order for arguments to be successful.
The authors arguable point goes on to talk about the problem with tipping and how the “less discretion you have in the matter, the more useless it is as an economic incentive” (Lewis 21). Lewis’ third point was not a hundred percent convincing “The Case Against Tipping” was a great essay; however, it lacked statistics. If the author gave more statistical facts the essay would in the end be more logical and the author would have better luck pulling in the readers. The examples located in this essay were organized quite well, into a chronological order; therefore, made the entire essay more interesting. Michael included both pathos and ethos into this essay which brought life and significance to each example he presented.
When you go into a fast food restaurant who do you see working there? The majority of the employees are high school students. If you were to ask those high school students if they would rather be paid $7.25 an hour or $15.00 an hour, without a second thought they would answer $15.00. It would be great to make $15.00 an hour throughout high school. What those teens don't know is
If they are required to work overtime, they must receive 1.5 times the normal pay, so that they would not quit and suffer from homelessness
But the people working at fast food chains and gas stations are still making minimum wage. “More than 400,000 workers make less than $15 an hour” (Lanzinger). The people who make minimum wage need to make more. The more money they make the more money they can spend for groceries and other stuff that is required for
It also gives workers motivation to work harder. “When forced to pay more in wages, many employers were hiring more productive workers”(Nicole,Krawcke). When paid more workers will work harder and with more money they will have better living conditions.
The Underworld is a place where all dead people that is talked about by many different Greek and Roman poets. Each poet puts a different little spin on exactly where it is and what it is. For example, in the Odyssey it is said to be located in the depths beneath the earth and over the edge of the earth across Ocean. Another poet wrote that there are two parts of the Underworld, Tartarus and Erebus. Tartarus being where people who have long died reside and Erebus the part where the newly dead ones pass briefly in.
Finally, instead of just saying no to the petitioners, why don't we try to reduce the cost of certain products, or change the hours of the resturant so theyre is more buisness and work to be done. There is always a way to compromise with both sides and this specific topic i truly believe that servers deserve at least minimum wage pay as well as healthy
Million dollar companies such as Walmart, CVS, and Costco can definitely afford to pay all of their employees the minimum of $15 per hour. The fact that the cost of living continues to rise and our wages stay at a minimum is pretty outrageous. This is why the rich will become richer and the poor will stay
Finally, workers do not receive a fair compensation for the hard work they do. After having dedicated hours and hours of their time to deliver a good service, many times they only receive a minimum wage salary. Words Cited Gentile, Dan. Minimum wage is not enough for people to rely on. Many people that make minimum wage are likely to go through a time of poverty. Employees that make minimum wage are said to put less effort into the job, than the
If they raised the minimum wage and took more money in taxes for things like social welfare i think it would help bring us out of poverty. And help many of those in poverty. Raising the minimum wage can be risky but us much needed there needs to be a way they can make it happen without making things worse. They don’t need to raise it so high it makes the prices go way up i think they just need to raise it to living wage and not poverty and keep the prices of goods the same and i think it would get more money flowing and things wouldn 't seem so expensive that is needed to live in today’s modern world. Two extra dollars an hour can go a long way and could eliminate tax deductions for things like social welfare because as we escape out of poverty less money from that would be needed to get spent and would save the government money also put more money in our pockets.
‘‘The Living Wage is the lowest wage at which subsistence needs can be met by an employee. Because the needs of each employee differ based on marital status, number of children, debt, and other cost-of-living considerations, the term living wage often pushes many hot-button political issues. Living wage can include general benefits such as health and dental care, and overtime pay’’ (Rank, 2013). ‘‘Legislation and policy conversations surrounding the increase of minimum wage quite often intersect with those of living wage. Proponents of a higher federal minimum wage, for example, argue an increase would help the “working poor” achieve a living wage and reduce the number of full-time workers who rely on government assistance’’
