The social bond theory will help explain Rebecca Falcon’s behavior. The social bond theory suggests that if a person’s social bonds are weak than they will be more likely to be involved with criminal activity. Social bonds include bonds with family, bonds at school, bonds at work, and bonds in the community. There are four elements of social bonding; attachment, commitment, belief, and involvement.2 The way a person is sensitive and caring for others is their attachment. Strong attachment to parents is important, but Rebecca Falcon had a weak one. Her mom’s fiancé was raping her and her mom just let it happen. This cause her to start hanging out with older boys and participating in sex at very early age. The stronger the commitment the person has, the least likely they will do something to ruin it. In Falcon’s case, she never had anything to be committed to. This means she was more likely to take more risks. This is the reason she started to participate in underage drinking and sex. This is also why she robbed the cab driver. She wasn’t afraid to lose anything, because she never really had anything that was worth saving.1 The way a person shares values with the community or culture they live in is their belief. 2 Beliefs include sharing, following the law, and paying attention to the rights of other people. When a person doesn’t have these beliefs, they are more likely to commit illegal acts. Rebecca Falcon did not share the beliefs of her community, so she participated in delinquent actions. For example, in society there is a belief that underage drinking, having sex at a young age, and robbing people is wrong.
